Colm Burke

Colm Burke (born January 17, 1957 in Cork ) is an Irish politician and former member of the European Parliament for the constituency of Southern Ireland for Fine Gael , as a member of the Group of the European People's Party and European Democrats .

Burke grew up in Dripsey, County Cork . He attended University College Cork, where he received his degree in civil law in 1978 . He was admitted to the bar in 1982 and became a member of the Irish Bar. In the following time Burke worked as a lawyer in his own law firm Colm Burke and Co. in Cork until 2007.

His political career began as a member of Fine Gael's youth organization, Young Fine Gael, founded in 1977 . In 1978 he became a member of the board of directors of Young Fine Gael, which was founded in the same year. Furthermore, Burke was from 1980 to 1981 chairman of the youth organization and 1981 to 1982 member of the state board of Fine Gael. In 1982 he resigned as a member of the Board of Directors of Young Fine Gael.

Between May 1995 and June 2007 Burke was a member of the Cork City Council. During this time, he was Lord Mayor of Cork from July 2003 to June 2004. June 2007 Burke replaced the MEP Simon Coveney , who had to give up his mandate in the European Parliament, as he was also a member of the Irish Parliament and a double mandate was no longer allowed. In the 2009 European elections , Burke was unable to defend his mandate.
