The Permanent Representation of Austria to the European Union is the diplomatic representation of the Republic of Austria to the European Union based in Brussels .
Duties of the permanent representation
The Permanent Mission has the function of an embassy, which it does not exercise towards a sovereign state , but towards an international organization - in this case the European Union. Its task is to convey information between Austria and the European Union and to participate in European politics in the interests of Austria. To this end, the representation maintains close relationships with the EU Commission , the European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers . It is Austria's largest diplomatic mission worldwide.
Legations and offices of the Permanent Mission
The permanent representation is subordinate to departments that are assigned to the following organizational units:

One of the important tasks of the permanent representation is to give the citizens an insight into the work of the representation as well as the European institutions.
- In 2012, 144 groups of visitors (with a total of 4274 visitors) visited the permanent representation of Austria.
Events related to Austria are also coordinated by the permanent representation.
- In 2012 there were 450 events with around 16,300 participants.
Permanent representatives
The permanent representative with the rank of ambassador is a diplomat from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and represents the republic in the Committee of Permanent Representatives II. The current permanent representative has been Walter Grahammer since January 11, 2011 , his deputy is Thomas Oberreiter, who represents Austria in the Committee of Permanent Representatives I. .
