Episcopal gloves have passed since the Middle Ages carried pontificalia which now rarely, but especially still in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite can be used.

These are finger gloves , originally made of fabric made by needlework , from the beginning of the twelfth century mostly made of silk and often provided with wide, decorated cuffs ( anicalia ). Until the 12th century, pontifical gloves were made of linen and were white. After that there was a transition to the manufacture of silk and the custom of making them in the liturgical colors . They are often decorated with elaborate embroidery, especially made of gold thread .

As special insignia reserved for the bishops , they were intended for use in the liturgy of the pontifical office , the Holy Mass celebrated by a bishop as head of the Holy Mass . The bishop's ring was worn over the glove.

Pontifical gloves were never worn during pontifical requests and the Good Friday liturgy . On the other hand, pontifical gloves were also used for the prayers of the hour or processions .

In analogy to the even older liturgical footwear, the pontifical shoes and stockings, pontifical gloves were introduced as an ornament for the bishop's hands. Abbots were expressly prohibited from wearing pontifical gloves unless they had received special permission from papal privilege.
