Gregor Woschnagg

Gregor Woschnagg (born August 23, 1939 in Bern , Switzerland ) is an Austrian diplomat . From September 1999 to March 2007 he was Austria's permanent representative to the EU .

Life

Gregor Woschnagg received his school education in Switzerland and Austria. From 1960 to 1965 he studied law at the Universities of Vienna , Grenoble and Cambridge . He then completed postgraduate studies in European law and economics at the Collège d 'Europe in Bruges, Belgium, until 1966 .

After a year in court , he joined the Economic Integration Department of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs (Foreign Ministry). From 1968 to 1973 he represented Austria at the United Nations in New York , and then until 1975 he worked at the Austrian embassy in Cairo . He was then appointed head of the press and information department - again in the Austrian Foreign Ministry. He acted as press spokesman for the Austrian Foreign Ministers of the Kreisky government - Erich Bielka and Willibald Pahr . He held this position until 1981, when he was appointed Austrian ambassador in Nairobi and permanent representative of Austria to the UN organizations UNEP (environmental protection) and HABITAT (urban planning) in Nairobi . Subsequently, from 1986 onwards, he was reappointed to the Austrian Foreign Ministry, this time as head of the General Secretariat , which he remained until 1987.

From 1987 to 1996 he was deputy to the Austrian EU ambassador Manfred Scheich , to whom he also assisted in Austria's accession negotiations to the EEA and the EU . From 1993 to 1996 he also acted as the deputy head of the economic and integration policy section in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , which he then headed from 1997 to 1999. From September 1999 to 2007 he was permanent representative of Austria to the European Union in Brussels.

Gregor Woschnagg has been in active retirement since March 2007 and advises the Austrian Federation of Industrialists on European issues . Gregor Woschnagg has been Vice President of the non-partisan Austrian Society for Foreign Policy and the United Nations (ÖGAVN) since 2008 . Since April 2010 he has been President of the Honorary Committee of the Spanish Riding School . Since October 2010 he has acted together with Bernd Hermann and Eva Nowotny as patron of the diploma course " Global Advancement Program ".

Gregor Woschnagg has published several publications on economic and foreign policy issues, and together with his wife (daughter of the former head of the Spanish Riding School Hans Handler ), with whom he has three children, also published a book about Kenya.
