The Roman Catholic parish church in Zwickenberg is consecrated to St. Leonhard . It is located at an altitude of 1002 meters in the mountain village of Zwickenberg in the municipality of Oberdrauburg . The church was first mentioned in 1334. Until then a branch of the parish Irschen , in 1789 its own parish was set up in Zwickenberg.

Building description

The church is essentially a Romanesque , late Gothic building from the 13th to 15th centuries. The nave was built in two phases. The low, recessed square choir with a straight end from the 13th century is reinforced at the corners by wall templates. Gothic pointed arch windows have been preserved on the south wall of the choir and in the nave. The former round arched south portal is walled up. The tower in the northern corner of the choir has ogival sound windows with fish bubble tracery and is crowned by a pointed gable helmet. In the west there is a brick porch with an ogival entrance. The church is entered through the ogival chamfered west portal.

A three-bay , late Gothic star-ribbed vault rises above the formerly flat-roofed nave above wall pillars with circular services . The keystones are painted with coats of arms and evangelist symbols. The late Gothic west gallery over a pillar arcade is vaulted under star ribs, the gallery parapet is structured by baroque pilasters . The nave ends in the east with a high, ogival, beveled triumphal arch. This is followed by the much lower choir with a Romanesque round arch. A ribbed vault rests on consoles above the choir. The keystone represents the Lamb of God . From the north side of the choir, a stone portal with a straight lintel leads into the sacristy .

Murals

Outside: There are numerous frescoes on the south wall of the nave. The Romanesque Christophorus from the 13th century in the east of the nave was exposed in 1942. A second Christophorus fresco in the middle of the nave was created around 1500. It was never painted over. The depictions of the Leonhard legend in the west, painted in two stripes, date from the first half of the 15th century, the crucifixion group above the walled-up south portal from the second half of the 15th century.

Inside: The vaulted areas of the choir square are painted with evangelists and angels. The wall paintings on the choir walls, marked 1438, were uncovered in 1979/80 and show three apostles on the south wall, three saints on the north wall and the Annunciation on the east wall . The frescoes in the two four-pass medallions in the ribbed vault of the nave show the holy Leonhard and the mercy seat .

Facility

The late Gothic high altar , which is missing the top and the predella , was created by a South Tyrolean carver from the Pacher school . The altar shrine contains the carved figure of Saint Leonhard, flanked by Saints Erasmus and Laurentius . The carved reliefs on the inside of the wings show Saints Catherine and Barbara on the left and Saints Dorothea and Margareta on the right . Simon von Taisten painted the outside of the wings with Saints Christopher and Sebastian .

The two neo-Gothic side altars were created by Augustin Valentin in 1902. In the central niche of the left altar, Mary hands over Saint Dominic and Catherine the rosary ; to the side are the statues of Saints Leonhard and Laurentius. The relief on the tabernacle door shows the birth of Christ. The right altar hides a crucifixion group with Mary and John in the central niche and the saints Barbara and Catherine in the side niches. The relief of the tabernacle shows Moses and the bronze serpent.

The pulpit was made by Johann Rotschopf between 1904 and 1910. The paintings on the pulpit show the four Latin church teachers . A rosary group carved around 1700 hangs from the triumphal arch. In the nave there is a painted carved figure of a Mother of God with a child from around 1420. The console figures of Saints George and Florian , carved around 1500 , originally stood on an altar. The seated figure of St. Leonhard comes from the beginning of the 15th century, the seat group of mother Anna with Maria from the late Rococo and the classicist guardian angel group from 1800.
