The movie trilogy The Lord of the Rings created by Peter Jackson based on the work of the same name by JRR Tolkien consists of the following parts:

Script and changes to the original book

The plot of the films largely follows that of the book , but has some cuts, changes or additions in detail:

  • The whereabouts of the other rings and their meaning are not dealt with further in the film adaptation, but the Extended Version shows at one point in the third part that Gandalf is wearing one of the Elven rings on his hand.
  • The figure of Tom Bombadil , who in Tolkien's work meets the hobbits on their journey and who u. a. his immunity to the effects of the Ring of Power does not appear in the film.
  • Instead of the Elf Glorfindel, the Elf Arwen appears in the first film to bring the injured Frodo to Rivendell. For dramaturgical reasons , her character and the love affair with Aragorn are also thematized in a number of scenes that are not included in the books.
  • When Theoden and his people move to Helm's Deep, they are attacked by orcs. The “loss” of Aragorn shown here, who later returns to Helm's Deep, does not correspond to the books.
  • Saruman dies in the film version after the Battle of Isengard. His reign of terror over the Shire and the later liberation by the hobbits Frodo, Samweis, Peregrin and Meriadoc are missing in the third part.
  • Instead of Erkenbrand, Éomer appears as reinforcement at Helm's Deep. Furthermore, Éomer is already present in the book at the beginning of the battle and no Elves appear to reinforce it.
  • In the book, the army of the dead only drives the corsairs off their ships and does not advance to Minas Tirith . Instead, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are accompanied by the Gray Company.
  • The Olifanten, belonging to the people who have joined Sauron, are free beings in the books who spread mischief among the archers after the attack by Faramir on the southerners.
