Baron Strathspey , of Strathspey in the Counties of Inverness and Moray , is a hereditary British nobility title awarded twice in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The current holder of the title is 33rd Hereditary Chief of Clan Grant . The Baron's family residence is The School House at Lochbuie on the Isle of Mull in Argyllshire .

Awards

The title was first awarded on August 14, 1858 to John Ogilvy-Grant, 7th Earl of Seafield . He already held the titles of 7th Earl of Seafield , 7th Viscount of Seafield , 7th Viscount of Reidhaven , 7th Lord Ogilvy of Cullen and 7th Lord Ogilvy of Deskford and Cullen , as well as the Baronetage of Nova Scotia belonging to the title 11th Baronet , of Colquhoun in the County of Dumbarton . In contrast to its Scottish titles, the Barony of Strathspey was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . The barony became extinct when his only son, the 8th Earl, died childless on March 31, 1884. The remaining titles fell to his uncle James Ogilvy-Grant as 9th Earl.

The barony was newly created for this 9th Earl on June 17, 1884. His grandson, the 11th Earl, left behind a daughter but no sons when he died in 1915. Most of his titles were hereditary in the female line and fell to his daughter Nina Studley-Herbert as the 12th Countess of Seafield. The Barony Strathspey and also the Baronetcy of Colquhoun, created in 1625, are only hereditary in the male line and passed to his brother Trevor Ogilvie-Grant as 4th Baron and 16th Baronet. His son Donald Patrick Ogilvie-Grant, 5th Baron Strathspey changed his family name to Grant of Grant . Today's title holder has been his son James Grant of Grant as 6th Baron since 1992 .
