This Brunner

Matthias "This" Brunner (born February 23, 1945 ) is a Swiss film expert, curator and artist.

Life

Matthias Brunner graduated from the Cantonal Commercial School in Zurich and then worked in advertising agencies in England, Geneva and Zurich (Wiener & Deville) as an advertising consultant.

At a young age he participated in the board work and programming of the Middle School Film Club Zurich, and in collaboration with Edi Stöckli he founded the Film Club of Platte 27 , in which mainly underground and avant-garde films were shown. The artist Walter Pfeiffer designed the posters .  

From 1971 to 1975 he was managing director of Nemo Film AG in Zurich, where numerous authors of the young Swiss film came together: Alexander J. Seiler , Fredi M. Murer , Hans-Ulrich SchlumpfGeorg Radanowicz , Yves Yersin , Claude Champion and Kurt Gloor .

Independently of Nemo Film AG, he produced the feature film Tonight or Never with Ingrid Caven in the lead role in 1972 with Daniel Schmid .

This Brunner worked on the program commissions of Filmex in Los Angeles, the International Film Festival in Locarno, Cinéma Tout Écran in Geneva, Filmpodium Zurich and the Zurich Film Festival. From 1993 to 2015 he curated the film tributes for Art Basel in Basel and Miami Beach. Over the years he has served as a jury member at film festivals in Venice, Locarno, Zurich, Milan, Palermo, Turin and Saarbrücken. He is a member of the European and Swiss Film Academy. He also writes as a journalist for various publications, including NZZ / Frame , Du Magazin , Weltwoche , Tages-Anzeiger , Rapporto Confidenziale .

The film lover opened Zurich's first art house cinema in 1973 with the Commercio studio. From 1974 to 2009 he was director of the Arthouse Commercio Movie AG with the Zurich arthouse cinemas: Studio Commercio, Movie 1 + 2, Studio Nord Süd, Kino Radium , Alba, Le Paris, Piccadilly and Kino Uto. 

In 1985 he founded the Douglas Sirk Foundation together with Douglas and Hilde Sirk, whose estate is now administered by the Swiss Cinémathèque in Lausanne.

This Brunner has dedicated his work to film installations since 2012: Magnificent Obsession - The Love Affair Between Movies & Literature is part of the collection of the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Cy Twombly Foundation, the Musée pour l'écriture & la littérature and the Norman Foster Foundation. The installation was also shown on Monte Verità and in 2015 at the Accademia della Musica in Rome. The Music Room , a homage to the Indian film director Satyajit Ray , was invited to the Art Masters in St. Moritz in 2014 . The magical mountain world in Daniel Schmid's films was shown in 2013 in the Chesa Planta Museum in Samedan in the Upper Engadin and as part of the Elevation 1049 cultural event in Saanen / Gstaad . The film installation Let's Pop Again - How Hollywood Popped Before Pop Art revolves around director Frank Tashlin and actress Jayne Mansfield . A Blast from the Past was shown in 2015 at the Flux Laboratory in Zurich and in early 2016 as part of EAT in Zuoz .

This Brunner received the following awards: 1st Prize from Europa Cinemas for Best European Arthouse Curator; Zurich Film Award for his services in the field of art house cinema; the Order of Officier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic and most recently, in July 2016, the Golden Medal of Honor of the Canton of Zurich for his cultural life's work.
