Kurt Gloor (born November 8, 1942 in Zurich , ZH , Switzerland ; † September 20, 1997 there ) was a Swiss film director .

Life

The son of insurance inspector Kurt Gloor and his wife Irma, née Surbeck, completed an apprenticeship in graphic design and the Zurich School of Applied Arts . He worked in various studios in Zurich and Vienna and was a camera assistant in the production of advertising films.

In 1969 he founded Kurt Gloor Filmproduktion. From 1969 he was a freelance, socially critical filmmaker who initially worked with documentaries such as The Landscape Gardeners (1969) or The Green Children (1971). Until 1972 he also ran the camera. His films, which critically dealt with the cliché of an ideal Switzerland, polarized the audience. The Zurich Film Prize awarded to him by the jury for his film The Green Children , which was one of the first to address environmental degradation in Switzerland, was refused to him by the city president and government councilor.

He became known to the general public with his first feature film, The sudden loneliness of Konrad Steiner , shown at the Berlinale in 1976, with Sigfrit Steiner in the lead role. The film about an old widower who is about to be put in a retirement home received numerous awards. After making several films, he started producing documentaries for television in 1993.

Kurt Gloor had been married to Verena Christen since 1965 and had a daughter named Corina. In 1997 he passed away voluntarily. His grave is in the Manegg cemetery .
