Airlie Castle

Airlie Castle is a mansion near the junction of the Isla and Melgund Rivers, around nine kilometers west of Kirriemuir in Angus , Scotland .

history

After receiving lands from King James I of Scotland in 1432 , Walter Ogilvy of Lintrathen, Lord High Treasurer of Scotland built a castle on the property that same year. It became a bulwark and seat of the Ogilvy family .

During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms , the Ogilvies supported King Charles I of England and the Royalists . In 1640 the castle was destroyed by parliamentary troops under the command of Archibald Campbell, 8th Earl of Argyll .

The manor house that exists today was built on its ruins in 1792 and 1793, taking into account the remains of the wall that were still preserved. Airlie Castle is currently inhabited and therefore cannot be visited.
