Eilean Musdile , also known as Mousedale , is a small, uninhabited Scottish island on the border of the Council Area Argyll and Bute . There are two berths for boats, so that the island can be approached from the north as well as from the south. In 1794 a menhir was noted on the south coast of the island. The rough granite block protruded from a base of 90 cm × 60 cm to a height of 2.75 m. It is no longer there today and was probably removed during the construction of the lighthouse.

geography

Bridge between the two parts of the island

The island is located at the intersection of the Firth of Lorne in the south and Mull Sound in the north and the Loch Linnhe inlet . It is only separated from the northeastern island of Lismore by a waterway about a hundred meters wide , which is almost dry when the tide is low. The nearest place on the Scottish mainland is the southern tip of the Morvern Peninsula in Highland, seven kilometers away . The coast Argyll and Bute around Oban is eight kilometers away.

The Eilean Musdile has an elongated shape with a maximum length of 690 m and a width of no more than 140 m. Its area is around 40,000 m 2 . A transverse furrow almost cuts off the northern part of the island, so that only a narrow ridge connects both parts during high water. At this point there is a bridge that enables a safe transition at all water levels.

Lismore lighthouse

Lismore lighthouse

In 1833, after several years of construction, the Lismore lighthouse was put into operation. Although its name suggests the neighboring island of Lismore, it is on the southern tip of the Eilean Musdile. The 26 m high tower was modernized and automated in 1965 and has been classified in the highest Scottish monument category A since 1971. It emits a white signal every ten seconds. The cost of the structure planned by Robert Stevenson at the time was £ 4,260.
