Imposters (English scammers ) is an American black comedy - TV show by Adam Brooks and Paul Adelstein that the cable channel Bravo showed from 2017 to 2018. The German broadcast followed in 2018 on free TV on VOX . The total of 20 episodes of the cable series are about the marriage swindler Maddie and three of her victims who want to take revenge and become con artists themselves. Thematically, the series revolves around identity , trust and love . Imposters received the criticism positively, the main actress Inbar Lavi received special praise . However, the series struggled with poor ratings and was discontinued after two seasons.

action

Maddie is a con artist who, with her two accomplices, Max and Sally, makes loot in the millions. She cheats both men and women with marriage fraud. Max receives the orders from the dangerous "doctor". However, three of their victims team up with Ezra, Richard and Jules to track down Maddie. In doing so, they find pleasure in fraud themselves. When the FBI is on their heels and the doctor sends his henchman Lenny Cohen, the two trios team up to deceive the FBI with their biggest fraud to date.

development

On April 27, 2015, Bravo announced the development of the series under the working title My So Called Wife . At the time, the station only had a fictional television series in its program, wanted to expand this division and took the opportunity to hire Paul Adelstein and Adam Brooks as showrunners , with whom they had already worked on Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce . Bravo Media gave the green light for the production of the pilot by Universal Cable Productions on September 22, 2015 .

Leading actress Inbar Lavi (2013)

On October 28, 2015 Inbar Lavi was hired as a female lead actress. Parker Young and Stephen Bishop were signed on November 6th. On November 16, the British Rob Heaps was cast as the male lead. A week later, Bravo announced the other cast of the pilot, including Brian Benben and Katherine LaNasa . The pilot was filmed in Vancouver from December 2nd to 18th, 2015 . The pilot had its premiere in October 2016 at the MIPCOM in Cannes .

First season

On March 24, 2016 Bravo ordered the first season of the series with ten episodes. The remaining nine episodes of the first season were filmed from August 29 to November 28, 2016 in Vancouver and other parts of British Columbia . Individual scenes were recorded in New York . During the shoot, Marianne Rendón joined the main cast as Jules Langmore on September 1, 2016. Aaron Douglas played another leading role in the first season . On September 21, 2016, it was announced that Uma Thurman would take on a multi-episode storyline as Lenny Cohen , a deadly, eloquent, and mysterious henchman. Thurman had been friends with showrunner Adam Brooks since she was a teenager in New York , so Brooks wrote the role of Lenny Cohen directly for her.

The day after filming ended, Bravo announced the series' title, Imposters , and the date it aired. The first season aired in the United States from February 7 to April 11, 2017.

Second season

A few days after the broadcast of the first season finale, Bravo extended the series by another season with ten episodes. The shooting was from Vancouver to Toronto ( Ontario relocated), where it was filmed from August 28 to December 1, 2017th Subsequently, parts of the story with Rob Heaps, Parker Young and Marianne Rendón were filmed on location in Mexico until December 17, 2017 . There were few rehearsals there, the shooting was spontaneous and only portable cameras were used. Other parts were turned off at Niagara Falls .

Uma Thurman's return was announced on October 3rd. A week later it was announced that Rachel Skarsten would have a recurring, leading role as Poppy Langmore , Jules sister, in the second season . On October 16, it was announced that Paul Adelstein , one of the showrunners , would appear in front of the camera as Shelly Cohen , Lenny Cohen's ex-husband .

The second season was broadcast from April 5 to June 7, 2018.

Deposition

While it was being broadcast on June 1, 2018, the series was canceled. Since the series was profitable thanks to the Netflix deal and strong international sales for Universal Cable Productions , the production company then held talks with Netflix , which ultimately rejected a possible extension. The series' discontinuation, according to The Hollywood Reporter , indicated a realignment of Bravo's fictional division towards bigger and bolder projects that can cut through the cluttered television landscape. The last remaining series of the station Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce also ended in 2018. Bravo's sole fictional series was then the anthology series Dirty John with Connie Britton and Eric Bana .

United States

The first season of Imposters was broadcast weekly in the US from February 7 to April 11, 2017 on Tuesday at 10 p.m. in prime time on the cable channel Bravo .

Since February 7, 2018, the first season can be seen in the US on Netflix . The series had better viewership there than on Bravo .

The second season was broadcast from April 5 to June 7, 2018, this time on Thursdays at 10 p.m.

Germany

In Germany, the first season was broadcast on Wednesdays from April 25 to May 23, 2018 in double episodes on the VOX channel . Initially, the station broadcast Imposters during prime time at 8:15 p.m. After two weeks, VOX postponed the broadcast to 10:05 p.m. because the audience ratings were well below the broadcasters' average.

The second season was broadcast on VOX from November 14, 2018 . The series was shown in double episodes around 11 p.m. after the newly started in-house production Milk & Honey . Due to poor audience ratings, VOX canceled the German broadcast on December 5, 2018, one week before the planned finale. The remaining two episodes were released by streaming providers in 2019.

The episodes were shown on the TVNOW video platform for a week after they were broadcast .

Strong international sales were one reason Imposters were profitable for Universal Cable Production . Ezra Bloom is newly married to Ava and works successfully in the family business until his whole life collapses when Ava disappears with all his savings and turns out to be a con artist. The press received the first season of Imposters mostly positively and said that the black comedy works thanks to the convincing leading actress Inbar Lavi (The Hollywood Reporter, AV Club, Entertainment Weekly). The series may not have the cleverest premise (Variety, AV Club, TV Guide), but it is entertaining and funny. Imposters sometimes become shallow (Variety, TV Guide, Serienjunkies.de), on the other hand, surprising twists make them exciting (Observer, TV Guide, TVLine). This disharmony between comedy and drama was a problem for some critics (Hollywood Reporter, Serienjunkies.de, We Got This Covered), for others it was the fun of the series (Variety, TV Guide, TVLine). Uma Thurman's criticism , which brought momentum to the plot, was undivided enthusiastic . Parker Young is also great at playing the lovable buddy who has little brains but more than enough self-confidence and vulnerability (Hollywood Reporter, TV Guide, TVLine). Most of the critics concluded that while Imposters was not a masterpiece, it was an unexpectedly funny series.

Probably the most critical of the series was Daniel Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter . Although Imposters is not the worst of the oversupply of trickster series, with little effort, an insecure tone, interchangeable leading actors and an overall bland production, you only get a cute and innocuous appearance. Nevertheless, he was enthusiastic about the performances of Parker Young and Uma Thurman. Parts of the plot are actually funny. Fienberg saw the main problems of the series, however, in the fact that nothing was at stake for the main characters and you didn't know who to cheer for. The fact that Fienberg came to a positive conclusion for him was due to the convincing acting Inbar Lavis.

Sonia Saraiya of the industry journal Variety also saw a central instability in the question of who to cheer for, but she came to a different conclusion: this is one reason why Imposters is so much fun. The surprisingly funny series walks the fine line between primetime soap opera and buddy comedy, with varying degrees of success. The most entertaining of the television series is the trio Heaps, Young and Rendón. The elements of drama and comedy are closely interwoven. In a strongly urgent plot, the characters grow in character. Saraiya called the series absurd and mood-wise inconsistent ("ridiculous, tonally inconsistent"), yet she manages to make this funny, unexpected journey palatable to the viewer. Thurman's appearance in particular can only be enjoyed. She concluded that imposters were having too much fun to answer more serious questions.

The television critic John Doyle of the Canadian daily newspaper The Globe and Mail was happy to finally see a female, strong and manipulative antihero in the lead role at Imposters . The captivating question of who one is for drives the sometimes dark, sometimes cynical comedy. Doyle says that although the series is not a masterpiece of serious-minded drama, the first few minutes of Imposters are addicting.

The criticism aggregator Metacritic gives an average rating of 70/100, based on five reviews. Rotten Tomatoes garnered twelve reviews for the first season, all of which were positive. The average rating is 6.88 / 10. The site sums up as a consensus: Imposters mixes slapstick comedy, top-notch screenplay, unexpected twists and turns, and a notable lead with compelling - and surprisingly ambitious - results.

Awards

Imposters received a WIN Award nomination in the Drama Series category at the 2018 Women's Image Network Awards . Inbar Lavi won the WIN Award as an actress in a drama series .

In the Internet Movie Database , over 8,500 users rated Imposters with a score of 7.8 out of 10, with women generally giving a more positive rating than men.

The premiere of the series was seen by 655,000 viewers. It followed an episode of the reality TV series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills , losing more than half of the viewers and not being very compatible with its lead-in . The first season had an average of 1.4 million viewers per episode (taking into account the first broadcast and the following week), with the proportion of 18- to 49-year-olds increasing with the second part of the season. If you include time-shift television , Imposters was among the top 10 cable series in the target group.

The second season start with 441,000 viewers and a rating of 0.14 fell by 0.07 rating points compared to the pilot episode and by 0.14 points to the finale of the first season. Imposters also had a weaker lead-in with the reality TV series Southern Charm . The second season had an average rating of 0.13 and 419,000 viewers among 18- to 49-year-olds on the day it was broadcast and the following day. In both cases, this is a decrease of around 50 percent compared to the first season. Due to the poor audience ratings, the series was canceled.

Germany

In Germany, the start of the series failed in direct competition to the 2018 Champions League semi-finals between FC Bayern Munich and Real Madrid . The double episode had a reach of 690,000 and 590,000 viewers respectively on VOX . The market shares of 14 to 49 year olds fell from 2.9 percent to only 2.4 percent later, the reach of the target group was only 290,000 and 260,000 viewers. The negative trend continued into the second week, so that the series was postponed from prime time to a later airtime. As a result, it only lost a few viewers, but was unable to increase its market share significantly until the end of the first season.
