Mary Ellen "Mel" Harris (born July 12, 1956 in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania ) is an American actress .

life and career

Harris graduated from New Brunswick High School in 1974 .

After her debut in a television series , Harris starred in the thriller Wanted - Dead or Alive (1987) alongside Rutger Hauer . From 1987 to 1991 she played the leading female role of Hope Murdoch Steadman in the television series The Best Years , for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1990 . In the crime comedy My partner with the cold snout (1989) she played Tracy , the friend of Mike Dooley , played by James Belushi . She also played one of the leading roles alongside John Ritter in the television film Unfulfilled Love (1989) . In the thriller My Brother Cain (1992) by Brian De Palma , she appeared alongside John Lithgow and Lolita Davidovich . In the film drama Wind Dancer (1993) and the thriller Distant Cousins (1993) she took on the leading role. Between 1996 and 1998 she played the lead role in the television series Something So Right . In the thriller Explosiv - Death does not wait (2002) she also took on the lead role alongside Daniel Baldwin .

The magazine Harper's Bazaar counted Harris in 1989 to the ten most beautiful women in America (America's 10 Most Beautiful Women) .

Harris married a total of five times, most recently Michael Toomey in 2001. She has a son (* 1984) from her marriage to David Hume Kennerly, and a daughter (* 1990) with Cotter Smith .
