Abused as a Baby (Original Title: Child of Rage ) is a 1992 television film by CBS Television starring Ashley Peldon , Dwight Schultz and Mel Harris . The film is based on the true story of Beth Thomas, who suffered from reactive attachment disorder due to neglect and sexual violence in early childhood .

action

Cleric Rob Tyler and his wife Jill adopt two children. Little Catherine soon worries them: she lies, torments animals and puts her brother Eric in danger. The parents suspect trauma; Catherine may have been mistreated as a baby. They begin to research and find out that the siblings have been taken away from their birth parents by the authorities for neglect. They learn from an adult sister of the siblings that she and, since her birth, Catherine has been the victim of sexual abuse by her biological father.

After Catherine physically assaults and injures a classmate, the Tylers decide to have the child assessed for psychotherapy. You contact the psychologist Dr. Rosemary Myers who wants to treat Catherine with controversial restraint therapy. The Tylers are skeptical, but agree to the therapy. The first session is problematic, so Dr. Myers must be persuaded to continue therapy.

Only after several sessions, at the end of the film, Catherine returns the therapeutic clinging with a hug from her adoptive parents, which indicates a possible therapeutic success.

background

Restraint therapies are controversial both medically and legally. Critics see holding on against the patient's will as a violation of personal rights and even bodily harm.

The film is based on the documentary Child of Rage: A Story of Abuse from 1990 and therefore based on a true story. The documentary describes the case of the abuse victim Beth Thomas.

The shooting took place in Vancouver , Canada .
