Hangman's Curse (Original title: Hangman's Curse ) is an American thriller directed by Rafal Zielinski from 2003 . The script was written by Stan Foster and Kathy Mackel based on a novel by Frank E. Peretti .

action

Tormented by classmates and desperate over the death of his only friend, Abel Frye, a student at Rogers High School, hangs himself.

Ten years later: A cruel and sinister curse lurks in the dark vaults of the school. More and more students are seized by a seemingly supernatural power. Another three candidates are on the death list; because every new victim is warned by the puzzling symbol of a hanged man before he passes out after devilish hallucinations . The suspicions are mounting, the time is running, but there is no clue to the inexplicable occurrences.

Nate Springfield of the Veritas Project , an FBI- contracted intelligence agency, takes on a job as janitor while his wife Sarah is undercover investigating the incident. Their children, the twins Elisha and Elijah, join them as students. When she explores the wing of the building in which Abel once hanged himself, which has been locked for 10 years, Elisha finds signs of devilish rituals . Ultimately, there is a "scientific" explanation for the supposed curse.

Sarah finds out, with the help of a scientist, that the "cursed" were contaminated with female spider pheromones using dollar bills . In their lockers, male spiders were stored in drinking straws, which later embedded themselves in the victims' clothing and triggered hallucinations after a bite. After a breakdown, different species of venomous spiders mated, creating a multitude of spider hybrids . The story takes off when a false victim, namely one of the bullied, is hit with Crystal. She does this by lending her jacket to Elisha Crystal after she was doused with lemonade by classmates.

In the following, Elisha follows noises above a ventilation shaft and thus enters the room in which Abel Frye took his own life 10 years earlier. There, Norman, a science student, raised spiders and contaminated dollar bills with female spider pheromones. Elisha is discovered by Norman, who wants to sacrifice her to the spiders because she now knows too much. Meanwhile the school is evacuated. Elisha flees from Norman, falls down the ventilation shaft and lands on the pentagram of a "witch's hall" where thousands of the spider hybrids crawl. Incapacitated by a broken leg, norms overtake her, who cuts open her protective suit and puts a poisonous spider on his chest to commit suicide.

In the meantime Elijah has found out that Norman is the nephew of Abel Frye and that he is therefore pursuing a campaign of revenge . Elijah and the twins' father find Elisha and take her outside to be given an antidote. The film ends with the hostile groups of schoolchildren becoming friends with each other and celebrating this at a joint barbecue by the Springfield family.

Reviews

Lou Carlozo wrote in the Chicago Tribune that the film was "flat hocus-pocus" ("plain hokum") . The film authors would implement the novel "manipulatively" . The script is a textbook example of how not to write scripts.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was "reasonably entertaining" . He combines elements of the X-Files series with “a less serious examination of student violence” and “campus clichés” .
