Edmund Piszcz

Edmund Michał Piszcz (born November 17, 1929 in Bydgoszcz ) is retired Archbishop of Warmia .

biography

From 1950 to 1956 he studied at the seminary in Pelplin and received on 10 May 1956, the priestly ordination . 1958 to 1962 he received his doctorate on church history at the Catholic University of Lublin . In 1973/1974 further studies in the same subject followed as a scholarship holder of the Institute for European History in Mainz .

After completing his doctorate , Piszcz worked as a lecturer at the seminary in Pelplin (church history, Latin and German) and as director of the local diocesan archive. In 1982 he was appointed auxiliary bishop for the bishopric of Kulm and on May 20, 1982 received the episcopal ordination as titular bishop of Aurusuliana from the later Cardinal Józef Glemp .

On November 11, 1985, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator sede plena of the Diocese of Warmia (the then Bishop Jan Obłąk remained in office). On October 22, 1988 he became bishop of this diocese , which was elevated to an archdiocese on March 25, 1992. The ecclesiastical province founded at that time includes the dioceses of Warmia, Elbląg (Elbing) and Ełk (Lyck) .

On May 30, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation from his office as Archbishop of Warmia, submitted for reasons of age. He was succeeded by Archbishop Wojciech Ziemba .
