Feed lime consists of a natural mixture of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate , the latter has a share of 7 to 20 percent depending on its origin. It is used in animal nutrition as a straight feed or as a calcium carrier in compound feed. Depending on the intended use, it is used in different grain sizes.

Almost all pets need feed lime, which feed manufacturers add to conventional pet food. Dogs , cats and poultry already receive lime admixtures with the usual food. In the keeping of cloven-hoofed and odd- toed ungulates , fodder lime is usually mixed into the seasonally available fodder, as the need for minerals changes constantly. Dairy cattle, for example, need a high addition of calcium compounds , otherwise symptoms of deficiency will occur immediately or the milk yield will decrease. Other lactating mammals also need more minerals if this cannot be covered by other feed. Birds need lime if they lay eggs.

Fodder lime is delivered in sacks or silos and added to the fodder as required. In connection with moisture it spoils and sometimes forms rock-hard substrates. Silos into which moisture penetrates can be permanently mechanically damaged or become unusable.
