San Pietro is a Catholic church and monastery on the southern edge of the city of Perugia in the Italian region of Umbria .

The church is unusual in several ways. Construction has been going on here since the 10th century. The current church was rebuilt around 1600 (1593–1611) as part of a Benedictine monastery.

Inside, ancient columns were taken over from a pagan temple, the structure of the nave is still early Christian (or pre-Romanesque and possibly dates from the 6th century), the choir is Gothic and the rich furnishings were created in the late Renaissance . It is kept in the Venetian style. So here we have a whole range of different styles mixed together .

Interior of the church

There is no window storey above the early Christian arcades, but a picture gallery of oil paintings , so no frescoes as it would actually be common. The upper storey pictures, painted in 1593, are by Antonio Vassilacchi, called Aliense, a pupil of Veronese who was under the strong influence of Tintoretto . From this he had also adopted the idea of the cycle of large canvas paintings that Tintoretto had executed in Venice in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco . Here in Perugia, too, the subjects of the pictures are scenes from the life of Jesus. This combination of different art forms resulted in a very picturesque interior.

The entrance is also unusual. Here some parts of the former Romanesque facade have been exposed in front of today's facade, and with them the frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries.
