Monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Acuto (or di Montecorona ) is a Camaldolese and former Cistercian monk abbey in the municipality of Umbertide at 240  m slm in what is now the region of Umbria , Italy . It is located around 20 km south of Città di Castello and around 20 km north of Perugia in the province of Perugia on the mountain called Monte Acuto . The monastery church is now a minor basilica .

history

The monastery was built for hermits ( Camaldolese ) around 1008 by St. Romuald founded. In 1050 Petrus Damiani was the head of the monastery. The church ( Chiesa superiore ) was consecrated in 1105 by Giovanni da Lodi, Bishop of Gubbio . In the 13th century the monastery suffered a decline. Pope Gregory IX Subordinated the monastery to the Cistercians, who sent monks from the Cîteaux monastery around 1234 , to which the monastery was also directly subordinate. In 1504 the monastery was given by Pope Julius II to Cardinal Gabrielli in Kommende and the Cistercians left it. The Commendatarabb then summoned Camaldolese who moved in in 1523 (according to other sources, the transfer took place as early as 1434, but Cistercians are said to have stayed at first). Today the monastery is entrusted to the Bethlehem family and belongs to the Archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve .

Plant and buildings

The three-aisled Romanesque church from the 12th century with a bell tower was converted to Baroque style and restored in the 1970s. The presbytery is raised. The church has a wide, five-aisled crypt, called Madonna delle Grazie , with six bays each. Material from antiquity and early Christian times was reused for columns and capitals.
