Mouans-Sartoux ( Provence Moans-Sarto ) is a French municipality with 9701 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Alpes-Maritimes and the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . Its inhabitants are called Mouansois .

geography

Mouans-Sartoux is located in the Vallée Grassoise between Cannes (twelve kilometers away) and Grasse (eight kilometers away) in the immediate vicinity of Mougins .

history

Mouans and Sartoux were originally two separate communities: Mouans on the plain and Sartoux on a hill called Castellaras.

In 1199 the Cistercian abbot of Notre-Dame-des-Prés settled in Sartoux.

Around 1350, the two places, like many others in the area, were abandoned because of the risk of the plague .

In 1496, Pierre de Grasse arrived with sixty families from the Genoa area and repopulated the area.

The parishes of Sartoux and Mouans were signed by Napoleon III by imperial decree of March 28, 1858 . , merged to form the municipality of Mouans-Sartoux.

The population in Mouans-Sartoux has been recorded since 1793. According to the Insee census of 2007, Mouans-Sartoux had 10,331 inhabitants - the highest level to date - which corresponds to an increase of 16% compared to the 1999 survey.

Every October since 1988, the Mouans-Sartoux Festival du livre de Mouans-Sartoux , an international book fair, has been held in the municipality and attracts around 50,000 visitors. The festival is one of the largest of its kind in France. In 2013, Resistance fighter Léon Landini presented the film Les Jours Heureux there, on which Stéphane Hessel , Raymond Aubrac and Daniel Cordier also participated.

L'espace de l'Art Concret (Space of Concrete Art) is a project founded by Gottfried Honegger in 1990, which has had a museum building since 2004, in which works of the art direction Concrete Art are shown.

economy

Mouans-Sartoux is a municipality with a rural tradition, the economy has long been oriented towards agriculture (wine and olives). The sericulture was one of the economic activities in Mouans. A cadastre from the 18th century lists 1738 mulberry trees in various districts. Sericulture continued until the 1940s.

Later, perfume plants such as jasmine and roses were grown. There are also some flower fields at the Tour de Laure , an observation tower for discovering forest fires.
