André Verdet
André Verdet (born August 4, 1913 in Nice , † December 19, 2004 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence ) was a French poet , painter and sculptor .
life and work
André Verdet grew up with his aunt and uncle in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in France. In 1939 he published his first book, Histoires originales du pays de Saint Paul , which was followed by several poetry publications. In 1941 he met the poet Jacques Prévert , with whom he wrote four books together.
During the Second World War he joined the Combat group of the French Resistance , was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 and imprisoned in the Auschwitz concentration camp , later in the Buchenwald concentration camp . After his liberation in 1945, he wrote the anthology des poèmes de Buchenwald about this time .
Verdet returned to his hometown of Saint-Paul-de-Vence in 1949 and made friends with many painters such as Georges Braque , Marc Chagall , Hans Hartung , Fernand Léger , Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso . After his work as a writer, which also included essays on his artist friends, he also began to occupy himself with abstract painting and sculpture. Among other things, he created sculptures out of glass.
In 1977 Verdet met Bill Wyman , a member of the Rolling Stones , and Jon Anderson , the lead singer of the group Yes . He then founded his own group and called it Bételgeuse .
André Verdet died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in 2004.
