Act

Until his retirement in 2003, Gunter Schmidt taught at the department for sex research at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf , which he was now head of. He carried out numerous research projects on the social change of sexuality and relationship biographies, including large statistical surveys of young people and students.

Gunter Schmidt was chairman of the German Society for Sexual Research (DGfS) and president of the International Academy of Sex Research (IASR). His best-known publications include the books Das große Der Die Das (1986), The Disappearance of Sexual Morality (1996) and Das neue Der Die Das (2004). Together with Martin Dannecker and Volkmar Sigusch , he was editor of the book series Contributions to Sexualforschung , which is published by Psychosozial-Verlag (so far 87 volumes) and co-editor of the magazine for sex research at Georg Thieme Verlag .

Schmidt is considered to be the co-founder of a constructivist sex science. He takes the view that in the face of sexual liberalization and self-determination discourses, a sexual morality that judges specific sexual behavior is being replaced by a late-modern negotiation morality that merely assesses whether sexual behavior has been appropriately negotiated between two equal partners. Schmidt takes a critical look at the social imperative of monosexuality , which assumes that sexual orientation is an unchangeable fact that is deeply rooted in the personality and effective for life. In his repeatedly revised essay Is There Heterosexuality? he believes that most people would considerably overestimate the extent of their heterosexuality or homosexuality. As early as the late 1990s, Schmidt distanced himself from the thesis, which at that time was still often held in sex science, that there could be safe sexual contact with adults for children. There is a power imbalance that threatens to override the child's sexual self-determination.
