The German Society for Medical Physics eV (DGMP) was founded in Stuttgart in 1969. As a non-profit association, it is dedicated to the promotion of science in the field of " medical physics " including medical technology and sees itself as a focal point in particular to initiate research, development and application of physical and technical methods in medicine and related areas shape.

Further tasks of the society, which has meanwhile grown to more than 1,600 members from research, development, application and clinical practice, are the exchange of experiences among the members, the presentation and discussion of scientific results and the further training of physicists working in medicine. The DGMP is currently divided into the three departments "Therapeutic Methods", "Biomedical Imaging" and "Biomedical Measurement Methods and Signal Processing", in which a large number of working groups are organized to deal with specific scientific questions.

In addition to the technical structure, there is a regional structure in the DGMP in regional sections in which members from larger coherent areas come together. The regional sections can offer their own events and thus make a significant contribution to advanced training in medical physics.

The annual meeting of the DGMP is the central event to present and discuss the variety of scientific topics that make medical physics as a strongly interdisciplinary sub-area of applied physics so interesting and appealing. It not only gives an overview of the latest research results and their effects and applications, but also takes into account the requirements for continuous training through further training events, workshops and refresher courses. Together with the Austrian Society for Medical Physics (ÖGMP) and the Swiss Society for Radiation Biology and Medical Physics (SGSMP) , it publishes the Journal for Medical Physics (ZMP). In 2001 the ZMP was included in various international literature services (such as MEDLINE, Index Medicus, Scopus, Current Contents, NISC etc.). Since 2010, the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) has assessed the ZMP with an "Impact Factor" subject to certain conditions, which has risen continuously in recent years and is currently (2019) at 2,322.

For the next generation of scientists, the DGMP offers regulated further training in order to qualify suitable graduates through the acquisition of special knowledge and practical experience for the professional profile of the physicist in medicine ("medical physicist") within the framework of a professional recognition. The winter school, which has been taking place annually for over 20 years and has been offering courses in medical physics and organized by the DGMP, the ÖGMP and the SGSMP as an integral part of basic, advanced and advanced training with the aim of professional recognition and renewal, plays a special role here in medical physics is recognized.

The DGMP awards the Glocker Medal, the Science Award and the Expert Award at its annual conference. In addition, there are several donated scientific prizes for young researchers, which are also awarded at the annual conference. Younger medical physicists have the opportunity to receive travel grants.

The DGMP is a member of the international scientific umbrella organization for medical physics IOMP (International Organization for Medical Physics) and the European umbrella organization EFOMP (European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics).
