The German Society for General Medicine and Family Medicine e. V. (DEGAM) is a German non-profit society that represents the professional and scientific interests of general medicine and thus the family doctor profession in Germany. The seat is in Bonn . Martin Scherer from Hamburg has been President of the scientific society since September 2019. The federal office is in Berlin. DEGAM had around 7,000 members in 2019.

history

The company was founded on February 12, 1966 in Bad Godesberg u. a. founded by Hermann Kerger, who was first chairman until 1975. In April 2009 a federal office was set up in Frankfurt am Main , and Edmund Fröhlich took over as managing director. In November 2015 the office was relocated to Berlin.

In spring 2012, the DEGAM Junior Academy was founded to promote the next generation of general practitioners, in which prospective doctors are to be inspired by individual coaching and summer school projects for general medicine in three-year programs. In addition, medical students who are interested in general medicine can become members free of charge. For students who are looking for a practice for their internship in general medicine, an internet-based internship exchange has been set up that structures supply and demand nationwide.

Guideline design

The specialist society sees itself as industry-neutral, independent, critical and scientific. It develops treatment guidelines for typical consultation occasions in general practice, for which there are also patient-relevant versions. So far, the Standing Guidelines Commission (chaired by Anne Barzel) has drawn up a total of 15 GP-specific guidelines of the highest evidence level S3.

On June 3, 2011, an S1 guideline for the treatment of EHEC / HUS was presented due to current events - especially for general practitioners. In September 2013, 16 S1 recommendations for action were also drawn up.

German Foundation for General Medicine and Family Medicine (DESAM)

DEGAM is the founder of the German Foundation for General Medicine and Family Medicine (DESAM). The purpose of the foundation, which was established in 1973, is to promote young talent in particular in the field of general medicine, as well as research, training, further education and training. Ferdinand M. Gerlach (Frankfurt) is the chairman of the foundation's board of directors. In cooperation with DESAM and Dr. Lothar Beyer Foundation , DEGAM awards the German Research Prize for General Practice (Dr. Lothar Beyer Prize) every two years (most recently in 2019). Since 2017, DESAM has continued the young talent academy sponsorship program initiated by DEGAM. In addition, DESAM supports the annual general medicine summer school.

Publications

The association is the publisher of the magazine for general medicine (ZFA), which is published by the Deutsches Ärzte-Verlag and whose special feature is that it does not contain any advertisements from the pharmaceutical industry. Managing editor is Michael M. Cooking , MPH (Freiburg).

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, the association published a commemorative publication in September 2016 with the title From General Medicine to General Medicine . The editor is Frank H. Mader.

On September 20, 2012, 24 future positions with the title General Medicine - Specializing in the Whole Person were unanimously decided in Rostock .

General and Family Medicine Congress

Since the company was founded, it has organized a scientific congress annually since 2013 together with ÖGAM and SÜGAM - without the exhibition of the pharmaceutical industry and medical technology that is otherwise common at medical congresses. In 2020, DEGAM will host the WONCA Europe Conference in Berlin for the first time with the topic "Core Values ​​of Family Medicine: Threats and Opportunities".

Cooperations

The association has been a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies and the World Organization for General and Family Medicine since 1975 . The society cooperates with the Junge Allgemeinemedizin Deutschland , the portal Deximed , the digital library arriba and is associated with the society for university teachers in general medicine.
