The GMDS - German Society for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology eV is an independent scientific and medical society based in Cologne and has around 2,000 members. She is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies .

aims

The association has set itself the goal of promoting medical informatics including medical documentation , medical biometry and epidemiology in theory and application, in research and teaching.

The association offers its IT, biometric and epidemiological methods as a cross-sectional subject in all medical sub-areas in cooperation and develops these methods independently, in particular with IT, mathematics , statistics and engineering .

With around 2,000 members, the association is a large specialist society and the only scientific society for these four disciplines in Germany. It cooperates with a number of neighboring specialist societies in exchanging experiences, pursuing common goals or z. B. in organizing joint workshops or conference sections.

The association participates in the further development of the representation in the field through expert representation z. B. in the planning of public funding measures, in questions of standardization, in the establishment of teaching institutions, in training, further and advanced training issues and in legislative measures.

Meetings

Since 1956 the association has been holding regular scientific and sometimes international annual conferences. The annual conference is the most important forum in German-speaking countries to exchange the latest information from experts and science in the fields of medical informatics, biometrics, epidemiology and medical documentation. Users and methodologists report on the latest work results with overview presentations and original articles and thus externally demonstrate the range of activities in this medical discipline.

In addition, the individual departments and their working and project groups offer further conferences and congresses. As a representative of others, the so-called “HIS conference” should be mentioned here, which every year mainly examines the practical problems in the area of hospital information systems.

history

Since the mid-1950s, the activities of the new specialist science "Medical Documentation and Statistics" flowed into the efforts of the "Working Committee for Medicine" founded in 1955 in the German Society for Documentation, the forerunner of today's GMDS. While the origins of GMDS can be traced back to 1951, it was finally constituted as a company in 1955. This makes it the oldest specialist society in Europe in the field of medical documentation, computer science and statistics. In September 1991 the renaming of "German Society for Medical Documentation, Informatics and Statistics eV (GMDS)" into the current name "German Society for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology eV (GMDS)" took place.

Until July 2008 the association was based in Bonn, now it has its office in Cologne.

Organization and structure

The general assembly regulates all fundamental issues of the society and meets once a year.

The President manages the day-to-day business of the company. The executive committee's field of activity includes professional, scientific and health policy tasks.

The advisory board consists, among other things, of the members of the Presidium and the heads of the working and project groups, working groups, commissions and departments. It decides on the rules of procedure and the main scientific work and defines general topics for conferences.

In order to carry out its tasks, the GMDS is divided into thematically oriented departments and sections. The departments "Medical Informatics", "Medical Biometrics" and "Epidemiology" are responsible for the technical work and are each headed by a technical committee. Each department is divided into working groups and project groups that are coordinated by the respective technical committee of the department. The “Medical Documentation” section also enables people without a university degree to work professionally.

The society publishes the journal GMS Medical Informatics, Biometrics and Epidemiology for technical communication .
