The German Society for Tropical Medicine and Global Health e.V. (DTG) is a medical society that is dedicated to promoting tropical medicine . history

DTG was founded in Hamburg in 1907. Since then, the history of the company has been closely linked to the Hamburg Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine. In 1936 it was affiliated to the umbrella organization "German Society for Hyiene" as part of the synchronization of the sciences. During this time there was a coupling of tropical medicine and National Socialist racial hygiene . Jewish members were forced out of the DTG. B. the bacteriologist and hygienist Max Neisser . In the following period, the specialist society ideologically focused on the recovery of the German colonies in Africa and the colonization of Eastern Europe. Several well-known members, including Claus Schilling , Peter Mühlens and Gerhard Rose , took part in criminal experiments in concentration camps during National Socialism . Since 1945 the activities of the DTG, i. H. it was effectively dissolved. In 1962, the DTG was re-established and renamed "German Society for Tropical Medicine and International Health" in 1997 and "German Society for Tropical Medicine and Global Health" in 2019. activities

The DTG creates guidelines and recommendations on diagnostics, therapy and prophylaxis of tropical diseases and on travel medicine topics (e.g. malaria prophylaxis and travel vaccinations) and works on resolutions of the World Health Organization . An annual conference is held at least every two years, at which the ordinary general assembly (general assembly) also takes place. Membership circulars are published in the journal Flugmedizin Tropenmedizin Reisemedizin (FTR). A prize for tropical medicine to promote younger scientists is regularly announced. On its homepage, the DTG maintains a directory of doctors with a valid travel medicine certificate or a certificate of work stay in the tropics as well as a directory of official yellow fever vaccination centers.

Courses and training

The DTG conducts general training courses on the subjects of tropical and travel medicine , public health , global health and occupational medicine and awards various certificates (e.g. travel medicine, working stay in the tropics, refugee medicine).

Memberships

The DTG is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF), the Working Group of Scientific Societies in Infectious Diseases (AFIM), the International Federation for Tropical Medicine (IFTM) and the Federation of European Societes for Tropical Medicine (FESTMIH).

Promotion of young talent

The committee for the promotion of young talent and training represents the concerns of students and advanced training assistants in the field of tropical medicine and global health within the DTG and aims to interest young doctors in tropical medicine.
