Jürgen Knobloch

Jürgen Knobloch (born May 10, 1944 in Leslau in the annexed Warthegau in Poland ; † November 13, 2008 in Tübingen ) was Professor of Microbiology and Tropical Medicine and Managing Director at the Institute for Tropical Medicine at the University Hospital Tübingen .

Life

Knobloch began his school education in 1950, which he finished with the Abitur in 1963. This was followed by medical studies until graduation in 1970 . From 1970 to 1973 he worked as a medical assistant and assistant doctor in various hospitals. During this time he did his doctorate and received his license to practice medicine . He then worked from 1973 to 1974 as a company doctor for the Awash-Tendaoh Highway Project in Ethiopia . His tasks included caring for European families as well as local workers and the rest of the population. He then returned to Germany to work as an assistant doctor at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine until 1981 . In addition to patient care and clinical research, he also conducted field research for malaria and, above all, for Ebola and Lassa fever during this time . For his research he stayed temporarily in Kenya , Sudan , Sierra Leone , Liberia and the Center of Disease Control in the USA . In 1981 he became a research assistant in the department for tropical hygiene, bacteriology and serology at the Bernhard Nocht Institute. There he completed his habilitation and acquired the license to teach medical microbiology and tropical medicine.

On October 1, 1990, he became full professor of the Institute for Tropical Medicine at the University Hospital Tübingen and at the same time medical director and executive director of the institute. At the same time he was chairman of the Society for Tropical Medicine and International Health from 1997 to 2001 ; also a member of the protection commission of the Federal Minister of the Interior until his death .

Jürgen Knobloch died on November 13, 2008 in Tübingen. He was married to Martina Henk.
