The German Society for Geriatrics e. V. ( DGG ) is the scientific society of doctors who specialize in medicine for the late phase of life. Ergo, the specialist society is concerned with improving medical care for aging people. It was founded in 1985 and has around 1,900 full, corresponding, supporting and honorary members. This makes it the largest among the specialist societies in Germany that deal with medicine in the late stages of life. The aim of the company is to coordinate research, practice and teaching in geriatrics . Hans Jürgen Heppner, professor at the University of Witten / Herdecke and chief physician of the Geriatrics Clinic at the HELIOS Clinic Schwelm, has been President of the Society since September 2018.
Memberships
The DGG is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF).
Congresses and activities
The DGG is committed to continuing medical education and training in order to improve the medical care of very old patients. This also includes the establishment of a specialist in internal medicine and geriatrics, which the specialist society has been promoting for many years.
The DGG takes a position on current medical and health policy issues that affect geriatric patients.
The DGG organizes a scientific congress every year, most recently in September 2018 in Cologne.
Online job exchange
Since 2011 the DGG has had an online job exchange for specialists with a focus on geriatrics. With income from the specialized job market, the DGG supports its press and public relations work. The job exchange offers current vacancies for senior physicians, senior physicians and chief physicians with or without additional training in geriatrics, for geriatric interns, general practitioners, neurologists and other specialists.
