The German Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases (DGPI) is a German scientific society of doctors specializing in pediatric medicine , which has existed since 1991 . It has the form of a registered association and its seat (originally) in Munich .

Task

According to the articles of association , the association has the following objectives:

  • " To promote the scientific and practical concerns of pediatric infectiology and to expand and disseminate knowledge about pathogen-related diseases in children and adolescents"
  • "To develop the scientific basis for the best possible care of children and adolescents with infections and their prevention through their own scientific studies"
  • to support national and cross-border scientific collaborations in the field of infectious diseases education in children and adolescents.

history

The new foundation DGPI came about in 1991 as part of the reunification , from a merger of the Infectious Diseases Working Group of the Society for Pediatrics of the GDR and the Commission for Infectious Diseases of the German Society for Pediatrics in the Federal Republic of Germany.

At the founding meeting, the professional society had 72 members. In 2009 it comprised around “450 scientists, paediatricians from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Finland and Poland”.

Since 1997 the DGPI has been a member of the German Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF).

The introduction of an official medical training to become an infectiologist , which the DGPI had been preparing for many years, was approved in May 2003 by the German Medical Association as an "additional training in infectious diseases". These training courses according to the European curriculum have been carried out since March 2005 at training centers certified by the DGPI .

For the first time in 2009, Roswitha Bruns was elected chairwoman of the association. The private lecturer and senior physician at the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the University of Greifswald announced that she would particularly promote further medical training in this area. Johannes Liese ( Würzburg ) has been the company's chairman since 2013 .

activities

As is common with comparable medical societies, there are numerous scientific projects and once a year an overarching annual meeting of the entire DGPI. These conferences have taken place in different locations since 1992.

The board of the DGPI consists of the 1st chairman, 2nd chairman, treasurer, secretary and 3 advisory boards. They meet once in spring and once in autumn as part of the annual conference.

The DGPI has been the most important publication since 1995, the Handbook on Infections in Children and Adolescents .

DGPI research award

The DGPI awards a DGPI research grant worth 10,000 euros. This aims to promote “especially pediatric infectious research projects with the aim of expanding knowledge on the pathogenesis , diagnosis, therapy or prophylaxis of infectious diseases in children and adolescents”. There is an upper age limit of 45 years for applicants. The assessment and decision is made by an independent scientific jury. The award ceremony takes place on the occasion of the annual conference. In previous years there was the DGPI Junior Research Award.
