The Society for Medical Education (GMA; English German Association for Medical Education ) is a German-speaking, non-profit specialist society promoting the interdisciplinary improvement of medical education. She is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies and the Association for Medical Education in Europe .

Society's goals

The association would like to stimulate and support medical training, further education and training, which aim at evidence-based , resource-saving and humane high-performance medicine and impart the ability to work with all health professions and lifelong learning. The secure pedagogical methods available for this purpose should be supported by activities of the GMA, e.g. B. through research projects and finding the best available evidence. Scientific and empirical research was and is the methodological approach of the GMA. The GMA organizes annual scientific conferences to exchange experiences.

  • History of medicine - images and role models in teaching
  • Reform of medical studies (model courses)
  • Admission criteria for medical studies
  • Definition of training goals (core curriculum, blueprint): For this purpose, the National Competence-based Catalog of Learning Objectives for Medicine (NKLM) and the National Competence-based Catalog of Learning Objectives for Dentistry (NKLZ) were developed

  • Teaching and learning forms in basic, advanced and advanced training

The organ of the society is the GMS Journal for Medical Education , formerly GMS Zeitschrift für Medical Bildung. The freely accessible open access journal publishes scientific articles on training, further education and training in the medical fields, pharmacy and health professions and appears on the GMS portal at least four times a year .

Prices

The GMA has been awarding a prize for student teachers since 2011. The conditions were revised from 2015, and three prizes have been awarded since then:

  • GMA project award for the further development of teaching
  • GMA award for innovative teaching project ideas
  • ZMA Publication Prize (together with the editorial board of the Journal for Medical Education (ZMA))

history

Fritz Kemper, long-time President of the MFT, was later on the board of the GMA, followed in 1982 by Jörg-Dietrich Hoppe . The long-standing chairman of the GMA until 1994, Dietrich Habeck , continued the close cooperation between the GMA and the MFT. In 1994 Florian Eitel took over the chairmanship of the GMA. From 2003 Eckard G. Hahn , Erlangen, was elected chairman of the GMA. Since 2005 the journal has been published with the addition "GMS" on the platform of the same name by ZB Med and DIMDI in the open access format. Martin R. Fischer, Munich, was chairman from 2011. In 2016 the journal was renamed "GMS Journal of Medical Education" and has published articles in both languages ​​since then. Thorsten Schäfer, Bochum, has been elected chairman of the company since September 22, 2017.
