The Federal Representation of Medical Students in Germany eV (bvmd) based in Berlin is the amalgamation of student representations at 39 medical faculties in Germany and represents over 98,000 students .

At the international level, the association works in the European Union European Association of medical students and the worldwide umbrella organization International Federation of Medical Students' Associations . The work is voluntary and the association is recognized as non-profit.

history

The organization emerged in 2004 from the merger of the previous Fachtagung Medizin eV (FTM) with the German Internship Exchange (dfa) . The medical conference was founded in 1947 under the name Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Medizinfachschaften and was incorporated into the Association of German Student Associations in 1950 as a medical association . In 1951 the professional association was one of the founding members of the IFMSA and thus also represented German medical students on an international level.

In order to coordinate the increasing exchange activities, especially with the USA, the Association of Friends and Sponsors of Medical Studies (FFM) was founded soon afterwards . 1971 originated from the West German Assistants exchange (wfa), which after German reunification in 1991 in German Famulantenaustausch renamed (dfa). In addition to arranging internships abroad for up to 450 students per year, the dfa is also increasingly involved in research exchanges and public health projects in Africa and Latin America.

In the course of time, there was increasing friction with the FTM, which dealt with topics that were in some cases similar, such as HIV prevention, refugees and peace. In 1993 both organizations therefore initially formed a loose working group German Medical Students' Association (GeMSA) in order to jointly represent the interests of German medical students vis-à-vis the IFMSA under this name. In May 2004 the general assemblies of FTM and dfa decided to officially transfer the previous working group to the Federal Representation of Medical Students in Germany. After the previous work had been gradually transferred to the bodies of the new organization, the dfa was dissolved in May 2008 as part of the bvmd general meeting in Göttingen.

structure

Ordinary members are the elected representatives ( student councils ) of medical students at the 39 medical faculties and universities in Germany. They send delegations to the general assembly, which among other things elects the board.

The structure of the board is based on the structures of the IFMSA. The board of directors of the bvmd is divided into the executive board, which represents the bvmd externally and internally, and an extended board. The executive board consists of a president and vice-presidents for international affairs (VPIA), external (VPE), internal (VPI), press and public relations (VPPR), fundraising, information technology (VPIT) and finances. The term of office for the extended board runs two semesters and for most offices begins in the winter semester.

The third pillar of the association's work in addition to the board of directors and the general committee are the permanent working groups and other projects that work on various topics in the form of awareness-raising and information campaigns, workshops, surveys and publications. The exchange receives and sends over 800 medical students from and around the world every year within the framework of the network.

exchange

Supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the bvmd offers the largest student-organized exchange program in Germany. In addition to the clinical and research exchange, this has also included the public health exchange since 2016. The contracts for unilateral or bilateral exchanges with over 100 partner countries are concluded at the general assembly of the international umbrella organization of the bvmd, the IFMSA.

Advocacy

As a representative of the interests of medical students, the bmvd serves to form the opinion of the medical student body and gives them a voice at the federal level. The positions are adopted by grassroots democracy in the form of position papers at the medical student meetings. The bvmd regularly writes press releases and is represented at relevant events such as the German Doctors' Day or the Medical Faculty Day . In addition, she sits on various bodies or commissions of the German University Association , the Society for Medical Education , the German Medical Association and the University Rectors' Conference .

Events

The ordinary general meetings take place three times a year and each extend over a weekend. Two meetings are held in the summer semester and one in the winter semester. Around 200 to 300 students come together for each MV. In addition to the plenary sessions, content is also worked on at the MVs within the working group times, the working groups and projects present themselves in a poster session, individual skills can be expanded in training sessions and the cooperation between the local student councils is promoted within the student council forum.

The working group events also organize work weekends on specific topics that can be attended by all interested students.

The Federal Congress (BuKo) has been held once a year since 2007. This also includes a weekend and every year offers between 300 and 600 medical students the opportunity to look outside the box of medical studies and to gain further training in workshops, panel discussions and keynote speeches on a wide variety of topics .
