A prevention project founded in 2001 by the Working Group on Sexuality and Prevention of the Federal Representation of Medical Students in Germany (bvmd), which is now represented in 38 cities and thus at almost all medical faculties in Germany, is definitely in love .

In addition to the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the aim of the project is primarily the holistic examination of sexuality and its medical and social significance. Mainly medical students, but also students from a wide variety of other disciplines, visit school classes of all types of secondary school and provide information about sexuality , love and partnership in a relaxed and anonymous atmosphere . The focus here is on the creation of a protected framework for open and positive dialogue and clarification on an equal footing, which is why With Safety in Love works according to the concept of peer education and in the absence of the respective teacher.

Subject areas covered include a. Sexually transmitted infections such as HIV / AIDS and the effective protection against them, basic anatomical knowledge, various possibilities of contraception , variants of gender identity and sexual orientation , as well as puberty and body image. Certainly in love is based on the latest scientific knowledge in terms of content and is explicitly not understood in its work as an alternative to school lessons, but as an additional offer to the sex education provided by teachers in the education plan of the federal states.

In total, more than 750 students nationwide are involved in the project on a purely voluntary basis alongside their studies for better sex education and the removal of stigmata in schools. Every year you reach more than 13,000 young people all over Germany.

aims

The focus of the project work is the imparting of basic knowledge about sexuality and contraception and in particular about HIV / AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, such as B. chlamydia , gonorrhea , and HPV . Certainly in love wants to break down prejudices and stereotypes of all kinds and encourage young people to develop a healthy and positive body image. In a society in which young people are confronted with sexual influences and content at an early age, this should create a tolerant and self-confident approach to sexuality. This also includes, but is not limited to, an informed and unbiased way of dealing with other sexual orientations and identities, as well as with HIV-positive people.

All of this forms the basis for what With Safety in Love wants to give the students the means: a reflected, positively lived and self-determined sexuality.

All of the work is in the context of better public health awareness, in which disease prevention is given a higher priority.

history

The origins of the project With Safety in Love are in Sweden , where similar projects based on the concept of peer education were developed back in the 1990s . By networking the Federal Representation of Medical Students in Germany (bvmd) with other national medical student organizations via the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA), the idea could a. find their way to Germany and so in January 2001 the project was founded in Rostock as part of a training workshop for medical students from all over Germany, at that time still under the name "With Safety In Love". This workshop was followed on January 8, 2001, also in Rostock, by an event of the “Consultation hour” under the title “With safety in love?”, At which, in addition to the then Federal Minister of Health Andrea Fischer , Beate Lausberg from the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) , the President of the State Medical Association of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Deputy President of the Federal Medical Association Andreas Crusius , and for the responsible state authorities Dagmar Doese (Ministry of Social Affairs Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) and Ms. Ulrike Zander (State Office for School and Education Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) were present and there their support for formulated the project in love with safety .

The Rostock local project then received official permission from the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Ministry of Culture to carry out educational events in schools across the country. Since then, numerous new local projects have been founded nationwide, so that with more than 600 volunteer members at 38 locations and over 13,000 pupils reached annually , Mit Sicherheit love is one of the largest projects for sexual prevention in Germany.

Certainly in love was awarded on May 17, 2003 at the German-Austrian AIDS Congress in Hamburg the “MSD Prize for special commitment in the field of prevention, prophylaxis and therapy support for HIV and AIDS 2003”.

The project was also highlighted particularly positively both at “HIV in Dialogue” in September 2004/2007 in Berlin and in November 2004 and January 2006 at the Munich AIDS Days.

Structure and organization

Certainly in love is organized in local projects, which work largely independently in their respective cities and regions, but always in accordance with the concept papers and the rules of procedure of the overall project as well as the official positions of the bvmd .

Local projects are each led by a Local Officer on Sexual and Reproductive Health including HIV / AIDS (LORA). The LORAs and other representatives of local work come together once a year for a nationwide local group meeting, where structures are jointly evaluated according to the democratic principle and new ideas and content are worked out.

At the national level, With Safety in Love is coordinated by the federal coordination of the working group Sexuality and Prevention of the bvmd. This consists of three National Officers on Sexual and Reproductive Health including HIV / AIDS (NORA), elected for one year by the plenum of the general assembly of the bvmd . In its role, the federal coordination is also a member of the board of the bvmd. The training of new members to become peer educators takes place regionally and is based on nationwide uniform guidelines on content, duration and methodology. It is coordinated on a nationwide level by the training coordinator appointed by the federal coordination. The working group Sexuality and Prevention of the bvmd , to which the project With Safety in Love belongs, deals with topics related to sexual health on a national and international level beyond Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE). In this context, the working group u. a. Organized campaigns for World AIDS Day and IDAHOT * (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia).

At the international level, the working group Sexuality and Prevention and With Safety in Love are part of the Standing Committee on Sexual and Reproductive Health including HIV / AIDS (SCORA) of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) and at the European level a member of the Northern European Conference on Sexuality Education Projects (NECSE).

Education and qualifications

In love with security sets from the start value on providing all students a good education and training. The complete training to become a peer educator includes an extensive basic workshop as well as at least two observations in school classes under the supervision and guidance of experienced members of the project . Basic workshops take place locally, regionally or nationally according to a nationwide uniform concept regarding content, duration and methodology. At these events, the basics and methods of sex education , anatomy and medicine are taught by doctors, psychologists and / or sex educators, among others.

The subsequent observation sessions enable new members to apply the skills they have acquired in their training for the first time with students under close observation and guidance.

The general rule is that you do not go to school alone. School visits from With Safety in Love are normally led by four, but at least two, experienced peer educators.

In-depth knowledge about the topics of sex education, sexuality and reproductive health is imparted in national and international focus workshops. Here, too, great importance is attached to inviting appropriate experts as speakers and always being guided by the latest scientific findings.

Furthermore, the project With Safety in Love is part of the close international exchange of knowledge and methods with other Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) projects. Every year u. a. the Northern European Conference on Sexuality Education Projects (NECSE) takes place, within the framework of which CSE projects from all over Northern Europe exchange their methods and evaluate them critically, as well as develop new methods.

In particularly close cooperation is Certainly love is also the sister projects respectful ° love Austria and respect love Switzerland . Every year one of the three member countries organizes the trinational workshop (TriNa), which, in addition to the NECSE, offers the opportunity for a more intensive exchange of the CSE projects of the three culturally and structurally similarly oriented countries, and within the framework of this common approaches, strategies and Campaigns can be developed.

The members of the nationally selected delegations to international advanced training events are expressly encouraged by the project management to pass on the knowledge they have acquired at key workshops and other national and local events.

The close cooperation with other projects such as the Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe or Pro Familia creates additional networking and further training opportunities on both a local and a national level.

With the help of a questionnaire for schoolchildren introduced in 2014, the project is also researching the scientific needs and outcomes of awareness-raising teaching. Before and after school, the students are asked completely voluntarily and anonymously questions about their knowledge and their attitudes to sexuality. In this way, the concept of school visits from Mit Sicherheitlieblieb can be individually adapted to the needs of the young people and thus also continuously improved.

Methods

Certainly in love works according to the concept of peer education , which is based on the fact that students who are still close to the reality of life of young people even at their age can familiarize themselves with topics related to sexuality and reproductive health in a casual way.

Instead of instructive teaching from the front, Mit Sicherheit love relies on group work, interactive approaches and the playful transfer of knowledge. The methods used in the project primarily serve to convey food for thought and are designed to be as realistic and evidence-based as possible. Beyond pure knowledge transfer, u. a. Everyday problems are clarified and the students are encouraged to reflect on themselves.

The cornerstone of all prevention work is absolute voluntariness, i.e. H. no student should be exposed to situations that they subjectively perceive as unpleasant.
