An internship (from Latin hospitari , `` to be a guest '') is a visit by an outsider to an institution, company or authority. Written documented lesson plans are required for the analysis and discussion of such observations . In these, at least the learning objectives and process phases as well as the didactic and methodological decisions and their justifications are recorded in detailed drafts . Attending classes in the preparatory service are not necessarily graded (there are also exceptions in the examination regulations).

Observations are of course also conceivable in the form that trainees attend the course of the subject manager and this becomes the subject of analysis and discussion, as is understood in Austria under observation.

  • In medicine , observation is understood to mean work as a visiting doctor or nurse in a hospital, through which it is determined whether one is suitable for a (training) position. Many doctors from abroad do an internship in order to prepare for the examination for recognition of their medical license . In addition, observations are offered by doctors who are particularly experienced in a certain method, who pass on their expertise. Participation in such an internship serves to get to know and learn about z. B. new surgical operation methods.

  • Journalistic internships are usually four-week stays in editorial offices during the course. They offer the interns an insight into radio, television, print or online journalism.
  • Guest students sit in on teaching hours at a university or school mostly for a fee but without examination obligations.
  • Observations can also be carried out as part of vocational training or an internship as short stays in other subject areas.
  • In other professional branches, e.g. B. the police , observations are carried out for training purposes.
