The association promotes the clinical and scientific development of psychosomatic medicine as well as the integration of psychosomatics and psychotherapy into the somatic areas and represents the interests of the specialist area and its members towards other organizations, institutions and bodies.

history

The association was founded in 1992 after the decision of the German Medical Association to introduce a specialist in psychotherapeutic medicine as the German Society for Psychotherapeutic Medicine (DGPM) e. V. founded. After renaming this specialist in 2003 to specialist for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy and after merging in 2005 with the General Medical Society for Psychotherapy e. V. (AÄGP) the society was renamed the German Society for Psychosomatic Medicine and Medical Psychotherapy.

The society embodies the methods of psychotherapy and psychosomatics in medicine that have been establishing themselves since the beginning of the 19th century. It is not procedural and represents all scientifically and socially recognized procedures in psychotherapy and psychosomatics.

organization

The specialist society is organized in the legal form of an association. In addition to the federal association, regional associations can be formed in the individual federal states. The statutes provide for the annual general meeting, the board of directors, the advisory board of the regional associations, sections and commissions convened by the board as central organs. An annual report gives an overview of the company's annual activities.

The board consists of a chairman, two deputies and up to six assessors. The board represents the basic orientations of psychotherapy as well as the grouping of resident physicians, the leading physicians of psychosomatic-psychotherapeutic hospitals or departments as well as the rehabilitation clinics and university lecturers.

The advisory board was founded in 1994 after regional associations had been established in accordance with the statutes as a liaison body between the society’s regional associations and the federal association. After merging with the AÄGP and expanding membership, sections were also introduced in 2005. In addition to the sections, the current topics and priorities of the subject are dealt with in commissions and working groups.
