The Society for Drug Application Research and Drug Epidemiology (GAA) is a specialist society for doctors, pharmacists, social scientists, epidemiologists and health scientists who deal with questions of drug application research and drug epidemiology . The GAA is a member of the Working Group of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF).

The association was founded in 1992 and supports scientific research on the application and use of medicines . The society sees itself primarily as a forum for scientific exchange, especially on the following - public health- relevant - issues:

  • Comparative studies on the extent and type of drug use by region, over time and by population group
  • Determinants of drug prescription and use
  • The role of the consumer, self-medication and the patient's drug preferences
  • Studies on the benefits and risks of drug use
  • Methods for recording adverse drug effects ( side effects )
  • Quality of the prescription
  • Strategies to improve drug use (e.g. medical guidelines , quality circles)
  • Influences of health policy measures on the type and extent of drug use
  • Health economic aspects
  • Methodological questions in drug consumption research

The association promotes the next generation of scientists by presenting research results at the annual conference and advocates the dissemination of research results. The company cooperates with other specialist societies as well as health insurance companies , professional associations and other health care organizations . The association is also a member of the German Society for Public Health ; she is represented on the organizing committee of the German Congresses for Health Services Research.

The association represents Germany in the European Drug Utilization Research Group (EURO-DURG) and organizes scientific conferences also in cooperation with other scientific institutions and societies that are active in the field of pharmacoepidemiology . The 26th annual GAA conference will take place on November 21 and 22, 2019 at the BfArM in Bonn . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 27th annual conference is planned as a webinar in November 2020 .

The 1st chairperson is Katrin Farker from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena , 2nd chairperson is Holger Gothe, 1st assessor is Sebastian Harder, 2nd assessor is Udo Puteanus, secretary is Katrin Janhsen, treasurer is Marion Hippius.

Founding members were Liselotte von Ferber, E. Greiser, H.-U. Melchert, Karl H. Kimbel, FM Gerlach, W. Kruse, SH Schug, J. Hasford, Annemarie Hoffmann, W. Poser, J. Krappweis and T. Elliger.
