Tomás Gargal

Tomás Gargal OSIo.Hieros. , also Tomaso Gargallo , (* 1536 in Catalonia , Spain , † June 10, 1614 ) was a Catalan clergyman and bishop of Malta .

Tomás Gargal was a member of the Order of Malta . He was on August 11, 1578 by Pope Gregory XIII. appointed Bishop of Malta , the episcopal ordination took place in Palermo .

As a bishop he ruled with violence and terror that no one dared to contradict him. Eventually the Inquisition stepped in and the Inquisitor Federico Cefalotto removed him from office in 1582 because of his unyielding rule and financial irregularities. However, the Roman Curia lifted the suspension and in June 1586 Bishop Gargallo returned to Malta.

During his tenure in 1592 he founded the Collegium Mellitense , now the University of Malta . He welcomed the newly established Jesuit Congregation to Malta .
