Stefan Zankow

Stefan Stantschew Zankow ( Bulgarian Стефан Станчев Цанков ; born July 4, 1881 in Gorna Orjachowiza , Bulgaria ; † March 20, 1965 in Sofia , ibid) was a Bulgarian Orthodox theologian and archpriest .

Live and act

Zankow studied the liturgy and spirituality of Bulgarian Orthodoxy in an Orthodox seminary and was ordained a priest. Later he was also ordained archpriest.

Zankow stood out through his intellectual penetration of Orthodox religiosity , published books on it and appeared at lectures at home and abroad. He sees the core of Orthodox worship as follows:

" In the liturgy of the Orthodox Church ... doctrine and experience, symbol and reality, history and present, God and man are united "

His insights became known to a wider ecclesiastical and academic public, especially through his lectures held in 1927 on the subject of " Orthodox Christianity in the East: its essence and its present form " (guest lectures held at Berlin University) .

Due to the results of his research work, he was awarded a professorship .

He was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and participated in its first and second meetings in 1958 and 1959 in Prague .

Aftermath

On November 24th, 2008 , an international conference in memory of Prof. Protopresbyter Stefan Zankow took place in the Faculty of Theology at Sofia University on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Sofia University and the 85th anniversary of the Faculty of Theology.
