The Fasel Foundation is a non-profit foundation under private law that was founded in 1994 by the Duisburg entrepreneur Wilhelm Fasel. It is based in Duisburg .

According to its statutes, the foundation promotes activities that serve to overcome divisions and understanding between people and peoples, social and charitable activities as well as the idea of ​​the social market economy . The foundation's purposes are realized directly on our own initiative and through the funding of selected projects. The foundation bodies are the board of directors and the board of trustees . The chairman of the board is Reinhold Kube. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees is Wilfried Lanfermann (Oberhausen). The Fasel Foundation is a member of the Federal Association of German Foundations . The district government of Düsseldorf is responsible for the foundation supervision.

Promotion of youth exchanges and social activities

To overcome divisions and understanding between people and peoples, the foundation supports international encounters between young people by assuming travel and accommodation costs and promoting long-term partnerships. The foundation is currently supporting various schools in Duisburg and the Lower Rhine region in their exchange programs, primarily with north-eastern European partner schools in Kaliningrad , Saint Petersburg , Pskow , Vilnius , Giżycko , Lubin , Kętrzyn and other cities.

Most recently, the focus of charitable aid was the renovation of the Tbc children's sanatorium Svetlogorsk in Kaliningrad Oblast , in order to make dilapidated buildings usable again and to ensure the minimum requirements in the sanitary and medical area. In Kaliningrad, the foundation also supports soup kitchens and the clothing store of a social station. The foundation supports various charitable purposes mainly at its headquarters in Duisburg.

The Oasis project of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters in Caruaru in Brazil wants to give street children a home. The foundation has been helping to set up this facility for years, which now looks after around 200 children and young people and also serves up 500 meals a month.

Promotion of the idea of ​​the social market economy

With the regularly awarded prize for the social market economy , the foundation honors people who have made a special contribution to the idea of ​​the social market economy. Associated with the prize is an endowment of € 10,000. After the presentation of the foundation, this amount is intended to support a charitable project according to the wishes of the award winner. The sculpture awarded with the prize was designed by the artist Loni Kreuder.

The first award winner in 2002 was the former President of the Polish National Bank, Leszek Balcerowicz . As finance minister, he initiated and decisively shaped the difficult process of transforming the Polish economic system into a market economy and bringing Poland closer to the threshold of joining the European Union. The prize was awarded at the University of Duisburg .

With Cardinal Rodríguez Maradiaga , Archbishop of Tegucigalpa (Honduras) and President of Caritas Internationalis , the Foundation honored its second prize winner in 2006, highlighting "his outstanding services for a new interpretation and a new understanding of globalization". The award ceremony took place in the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg .

In December 2009, the Fasel Foundation honored the Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and his "outstanding services as an advocate for a socially just and market-based European order", according to the foundation's charter. Juncker received the award in the presence of numerous guests of honor, including them Norbert Lammert , President of the Bundestag , presented at the Haniel Academy in Duisburg, and the laudatory speech was given by Jürgen Rüttgers, Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia .

In February 2012, the Chairman of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries AG, Klaus Engel , and the Chairman of the Group Works Council of ThyssenKrupp AG, Thomas Schlenz , received the “Prize of the FASEL Foundation - Social Market Economy 2012” . The laudation was given by the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft . Engel and Schlenz were recognized as outstanding representatives of the social and collective bargaining partners.

The Foundation awarded the 2015 prize to Gerald Kassner, the owner and managing partner of the tour operator Schauinsland-Reisen , in May 2015 . With the award ceremony, the foundation also wanted to pay tribute to medium-sized businesses in Germany, which had proven to be the engine for growth and employment, especially during the financial and economic crisis. Kassner, who is the third generation to run the family business, was rated by the foundation as a particularly socially responsible representative of medium-sized companies.

With the “Prize of the FASEL Foundation - Social Market Economy 2018”, the foundation honored “the successful structural change with the process of socially acceptable exit from the coal industry”. The FASEL Foundation particularly emphasized the commitment of Bernd Tönjes , Chairman of the Board of the RAG Foundation, and Michael Vassiliadis , Chairman of the Mining, Chemical and Energy Industrial Union (IG BCE), and the 2018 prize for both personalities as representatives of the social partners in November Awarded in 2018 at the Zeche Zollverein in Essen with the participation of NRW Minister Karl-Josef Laumann .
