Model of a Murus Gallicus (construction principle as for the castle wall in Preist)

Preist is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the collective municipality of Speicher and is one of the Fidei locations . The motto of the Preist community is: "Iwa Preist goes neist."

history

Between Auw an der Kyll and Preist there are the remains of a rampart fortification (sometimes also referred to as the "Keltenring"), which suggest that people lived in the area of today's Preist as early as 200 AD. The design of this wall construction has found its way into the literature under the term “ post slot wall type 'Altkönig-Preis'”. The place is mentioned for the first time under the name Bristiche in a sales deed , according to which the Trier Abbey of St. Irminen acquired a share of the tithe in 1283 . Although the Trier cathedral chapter also had possessions in today's price, the place belonged to the Irmin High Court of Orenhofen and was administered by its bailiffs, the respective owners of the Scharfbillig estate, until 1794. In 1473 Price counted 10 fireplaces, in 1636 there were 15 houses. Only after the Thirty Years War did sustained population growth set in. In 1840 there were 82 houses with 467 inhabitants. The population is around 800 today. In the course of the last land consolidation measure, incipient urban sprawl was countered, among other things, by creating a ring road around the community to mark the outer boundaries of the building areas.

On August 15, 1944, the American aviator Second Lieutenant Lester E. Reuss in Preist was murdered by civilians. Reuss was the navigator of the B-17 bomber "Bad Penny" of the 303rd Bombardment Group based in Molesworth, England. Reuss' bomber was shot down on the return flight from an attack on Wiesbaden-Erbenheim airfield at 11:58 a.m. by German fighters of Jagdgeschwader 300, the nine-man crew was initially able to save themselves by parachute, Reuss landed at Preist and was murdered by civilians. According to the available trial documents, four perpetrators were found on 1./2. Sentenced to death by hanging in Ahrweiler by a US Military Commission on June 6, 1945 and June 16, 1945. One was pardoned to life imprisonment by the commander of the US 15th Army and allegedly released after some time; the other three were hanged in Rheinbach on June 29, 1945. This is considered to be the first flight trial on German soil. Reuss was initially buried in Preist, after the end of the war the Americans transferred him to the American cemetery in Luxembourg , where his final resting place is still in field A, row 6, grave 8.

Blazon : “Divided obliquely from silver over blue to the left; in front a blue cornflower; at the back within a golden ring an also golden Alb cross. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The colors silver and blue indicate the former Luxembourg sovereignty. The cornflower symbolizes the agricultural economy structure of Preis. The golden ringed , golden Alb cross stands for the old St. Cäcilia chapel in the churchyard and the patroness of the place. It is located on the lintel of the tower of the former chapel, the symbol of Preist.
