Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial (German: American cemetery with memorial in Luxembourg ) is an American military cemetery with memorial in Luxembourg . The approximately 21 hectare area is located about three kilometers east of Luxembourg City in the suburb of Hamm .

History of origin

The German Ardennes offensive at the end of the Second World War from December 16 to 25, 1944 was stopped by the Allies with great losses. The American Armed Forces fought with air forces and ground forces provided by the 12th (US) Army Group , the 1st (US) and 3rd (US) Armies . The military cemetery was initially selected as a temporary grave site and created by members of the 5th (US) Armored Division . After the completion of the military cemetery on December 16, 1949, 5076 dead found their final resting place here. The final work was completed in the spring of 1960 and the inauguration took place on July 4, 1960. Luxembourg has given the site to the American Battle Monuments Commission , which had it built and looked after, for an unlimited period of time. The executive architects for the cemetery and memorial were Keally and Patterson from New York City , while the landscaping was directed by Alfred Geiffert Jr., also from New York City.
