history
On November 16, 1980 Pope John Paul II celebrated Holy Mass with around 200,000 believers during his visit to Mainz at the Mainz-Finthen airfield . On this occasion, the A60 between the Mainz-Lerchenberg and Mainz-Finthen exits was used as a parking lot for several thousand cars and buses.
During a visit by US President George W. Bush to Mainz on February 23, 2005, the entire motorway ring was converted into a roundabout for a few hours . In the morning the vehicles could only go clockwise and in the afternoon only counterclockwise.
As early as September 2006, a temporary interruption of the ring was threatened for the period from 2015 if the planned successor structure for the Schiersteiner Bridge to be demolished was not available in time. On February 10, 2015 at around 10:00 p.m., significant safety deficiencies were found at the approach bridge near Mainz-Mombach. A broken steel girder has lowered the carriageway by about 30 cm. This caused cracks in the approach bridge. The approach bridge had to be closed immediately. As a result of the closure, there were severe traffic disruptions in the Mainz / Wiesbaden region in the first week after the closure.
Since February 1st, 2013 there is a common environmental zone in Mainz and Wiesbaden . On the Mainz side, all parts of the city within the ring road belong to the environmental zone, with the exception of the industrial areas in Mombach and Weisenau.
Intelligent display board with a diversion notice because of the closed Schiersteiner Bridge (February 2015)
Even before the intelligent display board was installed, a permanently installed sign was erected on the A63 in the mid-2000s , which can be opened if necessary and indicates that the Schiersteiner Bridge is closed.
