Emergency bay

Emergency parking bay on a German motorway

An emergency stop is a short bulge next to the roadway that is only intended for emergency stops or other emergencies. It usually offers space for a vehicle . You may only stop in an emergency bay in an emergency, such as a breakdown. They can often be found in tunnels , on busy roads with no hard shoulder , in the area of motorway construction sites or on mountain passes .

In Germany, a distinction is made in the technical language between (emergency) parking bays on normal streets and emergency niches or breakdown bays in tunnels. The German traffic sign is accordingly called “Emergency stop and breakdown bay”. In Austria one speaks of breakdown bays ( § 53 StVO 1960 ), in Switzerland and Liechtenstein of parking spaces for breakdown vehicles ( Art. 47 SSV ).

Signage

In almost all countries, the emergency stop bay is shown in the signage with a pictogram , sometimes supplemented by the emergency signal SOS . Often there are also references to emergency facilities such as emergency call systems or emergency exits . The signage is usually placed directly in the bay; in addition, as in Germany, there may be notice signs.
