Johannes Bärmann

Johannes Bärmann (born May 10, 1905 in Hof ; † January 13, 1991 in Albisheim (Pfrimm) ) was a German legal scholar and professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz .

Life

From 1924 Bärmann studied law at the Leipzig Graduate School of Management and from 1926 at the university there . In the same year he moved to Berlin, a year later to the University of Munich , where he passed his first state examination in law in 1930. Bärmann then worked as an assistant to Konrad Beyerle , before working with Claudius von Schwerin in 1935 on the constitutional history of Munich as a Dr. iur. PhD. From 1937 to September 1939 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Aviation Law at the University of Leipzig. In 1940 he began working as a notary in Kirchheimbolanden . During this time, in 1942, Bärmann completed his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg .

After the end of the war, Bärmann was President of the Palatinate Chamber of Notaries until 1962 . At the same time, he began teaching as a private lecturer at Heidelberg University in 1947. From 1952 he was an adjunct professor for legal history in Heidelberg. In 1954 he moved to the Department of Law and Economics at the Law Department of the University of Mainz as the successor to Karl Siegfried Bader , where he worked as a full professor until his retirement in 1973. From 1957 he was director of the Mainz Institute for Legal and Constitutional History; the following year he served as dean of the law school. From 1963 to 1964 he was rector of the University of Mainz, then vice-rector. From 1970 he was also the first director of the Institute for International Law of Savings, Giro and Credit Systems, which he founded.

Bärmann researched and published in particular on German legal history, in particular on the Archdiocese of Mainz and Kurmainz . In addition, Bärmann was also involved in the introduction of the Condominium Act 1951, to which he contributed an initial comment and in the further development of which he contributed significantly through the commentary. From 1965 onwards, he also increasingly conducted research in the field of international credit law, which culminated in the establishment of the relevant institute in Mainz.
