Caldwell Tower at Uplawmoor

Caldwell Tower is the remains of a hilltop castle near Uplawmoor in the Scottish management unit East Renfrewshire .

description

The Caldwell Tower stands on a mound . It is a small, free-standing tower, probably from the 16th century. Its floor plan is square; it is made of rough quarry stone and has three full floors and an attic with parapet . The parapet rests on two-row brackets . The battlements seem to have been renewed.

The door on the ground floor is on the west side and gives access to a vault that is not connected to the upper floors. The first floor, also with a vaulted ceiling , can be reached via a modern external staircase. The ceiling above has been changed. The windows are small and there are signs of loopholes in the walls that will later be closed . The masonry is in good condition. It is believed that this tower was part of a Caldwell Castle arranged around a courtyard . Rubble, possibly from demolished outbuildings, can be found on the property.

history

Caldwell Tower 1910.

Ainslies map from 1775 shows a pigeon house in place of the current tower, which indicates the later use of this remains of the castle. There is also evidence that the tower may have been the focus of a belvedere's pleasure garden . John Thomson's 1832 map of Renfrewshire clearly identifies the tower as “Bacon H.”, indicating that the tower was then used as a ham curing building .

In 2011 the tower was restored to be used as a residential building. He received a small extension on the ground floor and a staircase to the first floor. The restoration, which was featured on the Channel 4 TV series The Restoration Man , has been the subject of controversy.
