Calgary Castle , also called Calgary House , is a country house in the village of Calgary on the Isle of Mull in the Scottish administrative division Argyll and Bute . The crenellated , neo-Gothic house from the 19th century is located above Calgary Bay on the west coast of the island, about 13 km from the island's capital Tobermory . Historic Scotland has listed it as a Category B Historic Building.

history

The house was built by Captain Alan MacAskill (1765–1828). He bought the site in 1817 and the house was completed in 1823. Around 1870 John Munro Mackenzie bought the house, which was subsequently extended to the east, on the side facing away from the bay. Calgary Castle belonged to Colonel Eric Mackenzie and his wife Elizabeth from 1948 through the 1970s . They had over 150 species of rhododendrons , azaleas and exotic plants planted. So they created a light forest garden that still exists today.

Others

Fort Calgary in Canada , around which today's city of Calgary developed, was named after Calgary Castle.
