Privy Councilor Julius Wegeler (* July 2, 1836 in Koblenz ; † January 17, 1913 there ) was a partner and later also managing director of the Deinhard wine trading company , President of the German Viticulture Association (1893–1905) and honorary citizen of the city of Koblenz.

Origin and youth

Julius Wegeler was born in Koblenz. His relationship with music came from his grandparents, Franz Gerhard Wegeler and Eleonore Wegeler , who maintained a close friendship with Ludwig van Beethoven . Like his father Julius Stephan Wegeler , doctor and local researcher, he had a particular interest in history.

education

After attending grammar school in Koblenz, Julius Wegeler joined the JA Kehrmann trading company in Koblenz as an apprentice on October 5, 1851. In 1854 he did his one year military service; the following year, 1855, he worked for the Wilhelm Menzer office building in Cologne . From April to July 1857 Wegeler went to Paris to work for Dopfeld & Bruzard.

Wegeler at Deinhard

In July 1857 he was employed in export by Deinhard & Jordan , a wine and sparkling wine cellar. There he was responsible for the representation in England, Belgium and the Netherlands. An amendment to the English Wine Tax Act of 1860, which measured the wine tax according to the alcohol content of the wines, gave the Rhine and Moselle wines sold by Deinhard a good position on the English market.

On May 28, 1861, Julius Wegeler married the Deinhard daughter Emma. In 1864 August Deinhard appointed him to the management of Deinhard & Co., Coblenz and London. With the death of August Deinhard in 1865, the management lay with Julius Wegeler and his brother-in-law Johann Jacob Hasslacher. During his period of activity, the sparkling wine brand "Deinhard Cabinet" was introduced in 1888 and is still produced today. In 1880 Wegeler's brother Carl became a co-owner at Deinhard and together the two brothers looked after the well-being of their employees in the form of foundations and social institutions.

The Wegeler winery

With the purchase of the Baron von Wetzel-Karben winery in Rüdesheim am Rhein in 1882, Julius Wegeler formed the first foundation for the privy councilor J. Wegeler winery . In addition to the best locations in the Rheingau, with the purchase of the A. Wagner winery in Oestrich, he also came into the possession of the manor house in which the winery administration is still based today.

On November 7, 1900, Julius and Carl Wegeler laid the foundation stone for the Bernkasteler manor house with the purchase of a large part of the Bernkasteler Doctor . In 1903 the newly built manor house was completed. In addition to the farm building, an Art Nouveau mansion was built, which, with its park, served as the Wegeler family's summer residence.

Other activities by Wegelers

In 1872 Julius Wegeler became a member of the Koblenz city council, in 1884 its vice-president and in 1893 first president of the German winegrowing association. In 1903 and 1904 Wegeler was President of the Koblenz Chamber of Commerce .

In 1904 his wife Emma Wegeler died. In the same year he left the management of Deinhard and was made an honorary citizen of Koblenz . In 1905 he resigned from the position of President of the German Viticulture Association at the Viticulture Congress in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. In the years up to his death in 1913, Julius Wegeler devoted himself, among other things, to the restoration of the museum hall in the old department store in Koblenz (1909) and the establishment of a public library at Deinhard.
