Stanke Dimitrov ( Bulgarian Станке Димитров , born as Stefan Dimitrow Todorow , also used the pseudonym Marek ; * February 5, 1889 in Dupnitsa ; † August 26, 1944 in Bryansk ) was a Bulgarian anti-fascist and a high member of the Bulgarian Communist Party , who was decisive in 1925 was involved in the Sveta Nedelya cathedral bombing . The city of Dupnitsa was named after him from 1948 to 1992.

Life

In 1904 he had joined the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party , the so-called Narrow Socialists . In 1918 he took part in the Vladaya Uprising . In 1920 he was sentenced to twelve years in prison, but was given amnesty in 1921 . In 1923 he took over the function of secretary of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party.

Another conviction followed. This time he was sentenced to death in absentia. In 1925 he emigrated to the Soviet Union , where he became a member of the CPSU . Dimitrov taught at the International Lenin School and from 1932 worked in the Balkan Secretariat of the Executive Committee of the Comintern . In 1935 he returned to Bulgaria illegally. He became a member of the Politburo of the Bulgarian Communist Party and again took over the role of Secretary of the Central Committee. However, in 1937 he went back to the Soviet Union. From 1941 to 1944 he headed illegal radio stations for the Bulgarian resistance.
