The Bernkasteler Doctor is a German single location within the large Badstube location , directly above the historic center of Bernkastel-Kues on the Middle Moselle . It is considered to be one of the famous and once most expensive vineyards in the world. Some of the Riesling wines produced there are counted among the best white wines by wine critics and experts in the wine market .

Viticulture

In the 3.25  hectares large steep slope is exclusively Riesling cultivated. The exposure is south-southwest. The soil of weathered clay slate has a stony- loamy character. It produces wines that are often finely structured and at the same time can develop a strong, spicy taste. As a rule, premium wines are produced . Because of the incline and the resulting manual labor, the cultivation is costly and very laborious (→ steep-slope viticulture ).

The Bernkasteler Doctor is cultivated viticultural by the wineries Privy Councilor J. Wegeler (1.1 ha), Wwe. H. Thanisch - Heirs Thanisch , Weingut Wwe. H. Thanisch - heirs of Müller-Burggraef , Patrick Lauerburg and Imperial Count of Kesselstatt . A plot of 0.26 hectares is owned by the Heilig-Geist-Stiftung , which has been leased to the Schloss Lieser and Markus Molitor wineries for nine years from 2016. The rent for this averages € 7.75 per m² per year. The Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt winery had leased 0.06 hectares from Wegeler until the end of 2014.

history

The origin of the name is not clear. The fact that the wine of the Doctorberg is said to have healed the Trier Elector Boemund II of a serious illness during a stay at Landshut Castle is part of the legend. It was first mentioned in a document in 1677, when the clergyman Heinrich Linden inherited it. However, there is evidence that King Edward VII of Great Britain drank it as "medicine". In 1900 Privy Councilor Julius Wegeler , co-owner of the Deinhard sparkling wine cellar , acquired a 43.22  ares plot on Doctorberg for 100  gold marks per vine, including the wines in the cellar. Since then, the steep slope has had the reputation of being Germany's most expensive vineyard, as this purchase price has never been reached again for a German vineyard (as of 2012).

The Doctor wines were also valued by Kaiser Wilhelm II, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Konrad Adenauer and King Eduard VII. It is documented that the Adenauer delegation carried bottles of the 1950s Bernkasteler Doctor Spätlese with them on their trip to Moscow in September 1955 , which were handed over at the German lunch in the dacha during the decisive diplomatic talks on September 11th and were also given as gifts to Bulganin, Khrushchev and Molotov.
