National index of consumer prices

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The national index of consumer prices (CPI) measures the inflation of the most important consumer goods (goods and services) for Swiss private households . The average of the population is taken in order to obtain a "truthful" value. The CPI measures price development using a shopping basket that contains around 1050 goods and services. These are weighted according to their share in the household budget.

The LIK is collected by the Federal Statistical Office .

Legal basis

The Federal Statistics Law of 9 October 1992 (SR 431.01) and the Ordinance on the Conduct of Federal Statistical Surveys of 30 June 1993 (SR 431.012.1) serve as the legal basis for the national consumer price index.

Type of survey

The LIK is a sample survey - on site, by telephone, internet, post or using scanner data. Around 50,000 prices are collected at around 3,000 sales outlets every month. Participation in the survey is compulsory.

execution

The CPI has been collected since 1914. In 1939, 1966, 1977, 1982, 1993, 2000, 2005 and 2010 there were extensive revisions with rebasing. Today the survey takes place every month during the first two weeks of the month (exception: survey of the prices for heating oil and fuels in the 1st and 3rd week of the month).

Composition of the shopping cart

The shopping cart of the LIK 2012 is composed as follows:

Main group %-Proportion of
Food and non-alcoholic beverages 10.306
Alcoholic beverages and tobacco 1.761
Clothing and shoes 4.084
Housing and energy 26,156
Household items and current housekeeping 4,752
Health care 14.632

Taxes, liability insurance and health insurance premiums are not included, as this should exclusively concern "private consumption". For example, the prices of the drugs and not the health insurance premiums are measured.

Importance of the LIK

The LIK is of great informational importance for:

  • Consumer behavior: decisions about saving or consuming
  • public institutions (social insurance, federal government, cantons and municipalities): economic policy and discussion of inflation → adjustment of budget, pensions and premiums.
  • Company: assessment of the economic situation
  • Private households: decisions about saving or consuming
