Michael Bernard Eifian Jones (born January 28, 1952 in Welshpool , Wales ) is a Welsh-French singer and guitarist, who became famous mainly in France.

Life

Michael Jones is the son of John Merick Jones, a Welshman, and Simone Lalleman, a French woman from Normandy . In his childhood and youth he learned drums and later guitar . In 1966 he formed his first group, the District Council Dib Dob Band .

At the age of 19, Jones traveled to France on vacation , where he stayed and settled. In the following six years he played as guitarist and singer in the Norman group Travers & Cie with Hubert Travert and Michael Cousin, who is now Jones' stage drummer. The trio released a single in 1972 , the B-side of which Jones co-wrote.

In 1977 Jones joined the group Taï Phong , within which he made the acquaintance of Jean-Jacques Goldman , whom he replaced on tours. In 1979 he also appeared with the Toulouse group Week-end millionaire . After separating from Taï Phong in 1980, Jones founded another group under the name Gulfstream , which was produced by William Sheller , and also worked on other projects. Jean-Jacques Goldman wrote him the song Viens in 1983 under the pseudonym Sweet Memories .

From 1983 on, Jones first worked with Jean-Jacques Goldman, whom he accompanied on tours, and later with Carole Fredericks . In 1985 he wrote and performed the hit Je te donne together with Goldman . The following year his song Guitar Man was released as a single, which he also sang on concerts on Goldman's tours.

Carole Fredericks, Jean-Jacques Goldman and Michael Jones finally formed the trio Fredericks Goldman Jones in 1990 and released several successful albums in the five years that followed.

In 1993 Jones released his album Best-of 83-93 , which contained eight songs, three of which were unreleased at the time of publication. In 1998 Jones first worked on the recordings of Goldman's album En passant and then on his friend's subsequent tour. He was also involved in Goldman's album Chanson pour les pieds , released in 2001, and the tour that followed.

In addition to his work in the Goldman environment, Jones continued to work on his solo career with the release of the albums À consommer sans modération (1997) and Prises et reprises (2004). On tour he was accompanied by bassist Claude Le Péron, drummer Michel Cousin, guitarist Jacky Mascarel and on the piano by harpist Caroline Bonhomme.

In 2004, 2005 and 2006 Jones appeared on the French television program Star Academy , a music and reality TV format that is in parts comparable to the German talent show Deutschland sucht den Superstar . He then founded the group El Club with Erick Benzi, Gildas Arzel and Christian Séguret , whose debut album of the same name was released on June 4, 2007.

In November 2008, Jones appeared at the invitation of the British group Status Quo as a "special guest" at the concerts of the group's France tour. On June 8, 2009 he released the album Celtic Blues ., Which was followed by the live album Celtic Blues Live .

In 2013 Jones announced the end of his career for health reasons, which he concluded with a final tour of France and the album 40 60 . The album includes two new pieces written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, a duet with Francis Cabrel and a new studio recording of the duet Je te donne with Goldman as an acoustic version. The name of the album 40 60 is a reference to Jones' 40-year career as a musician and his age when the album was released.
